Or she could be exaggerating. Wouldn't be that interesting if it was only 3 or 30.
Either way, Leaf fans don't deserve to celebrate a Stanley Cup win.
|
It is a lot of people, but it is still the very slight minority of fans. There are millions of Leafs fans, that means that there are going to be a lot of idiots. I am sure that the vast majority of their fans are great people who go to work just the same way that you or I do, enjoy watching hockey and then going to sleep at the end of the night, regardless as to whether their team is any good or not. There are the few people who get worked up and have a personal dislike of a team or player so that it leaches into their personal life and get angry. Those people are the people who need to find something else to occupy their time, take up yoga, read a book, furiously masterbate into a sock for a while, essentially anything else. It is a sport, which can bring joy and heartbreak, but it is also completely inconsequential to one's life and needs to be treated as such.

It can't be nice for someone in Colborne or Raymond's family to read "fire him into the sun" or "trade him for a bag of rocks". Hopefully Hiller's family doesn't read English.

The entire world shouldn't have to be stepping on eggshells for fear of making the few uncomfortable.
Everyone will be offended by something whether it's warranted or not. It isn't our job to make the internet a safe space for everyone.
If you know that cousin Colborne is a terrible hockey player, it probably wouldn't be wise to check out the fan forum for his team. And if you do choose to visit, you certainly shouldn't be surprised that the fans have a distaste for cousin Colborne. And if they are surprised, then they probably don't have the mental capacity to know what's being said.

This is exactly the kind of garbage he was talking about.

He's an Oiler - that's different. They get what they deserve. I'm hypocritical, I know. But also, it's easier to shrug off stuff said on the rival's forum.

True, but it wouldn't hurt to remember that these are people. Saying someone's no good at hockey is one thing, saying they should be fired into the sun or whatever he was saying is just rude. I don't take him to mean you can't say that stuff, just that maybe we tone down the crazy... it's still a hockey game.

I am sure that the people who are compensated with millions of dollars to play a game can survive criticism about how they played. There is a difference between this and finding the social media and cell phone of a player's wife and then contacting them to make threats.
I know some of the spouses from NHL and ex-NHL players and they are aware of the realities of sports but there are lines that are crossed when you involve them and their personal safety.

I think I expressly said it was far far less of an issue.
That said, I'm not talking about criticizing how someone played. I'm talking about personal insults. Of course, that line gets pretty blurry sometimes.

Oh, I'm not saying you can't criticise players about how they played. That's exactly what we should do.
I'm saying its garbage when you criticise their family members for not being objective enough to expect some of the things said, or that their family members must have a lowered mental capacity to be surprised by harsh criticisms.
I think that's embarrassing. No true fan stands behind narratives like that or starts talking about a player's family in a derogatory fashion.
Pure trash.

Agreed, it is just a sport. I do think that saying player x should be, 'traded for a bag of pucks' or 'fired into the sun' isn't in that same realm. Not even close.

Those were poor examples, admittedly. I've seen much worse here (I assume "fired into the sun" is some sort of clever reference, but I don't know it).

Talk about them in the context of their play in the NHL and their actions in public all you want. It's what they're paid for. Being entertainers. It's in the job description.
Once you leave the context of the public eye, have respect.
Not that hard?

It's your reading comprehension that's pure trash. My comment was directed at GioForPM's statement, not the OP.

My comprehension was right on point, don't know where you think I was talking about the OP, it was completely in regard to your reference to players families.

It really was, the simplicity and solidity of the mechanics made it so good. I'd rather play it again over any new COD. Unreal tournament had ambience, no dlc bullcrap, amazing controls, phenomenal maps and weapons, better internet connectivity than modern shooters. I forgot how good those games were.
