I've changed my mind. I decided, if I was going to be pro-Boedker, I should do more digging on the guy, so I went and read a bunch of Coyotes threads about him to get a sense of what they thought of him and then poked around in the fancy-stats websites.
I'm out on Boedker.
The general consensus of Arizona fans is that he's a really streaky perimeter player who's given lots of opportunities (he's like 3rd or 4th in the league in PP TOI or something) but simply can't produce when the time comes.
Has the tools, but doesn't put it all together, plays a decent game in all zones, but never manages to really impress. Granted, he's playing a top-3 role in 'Zona, and wouldn't here, but they do harp on his lack of physicality.
Also, the fancy stats aren't in his favour: -1.96 FF%Rel, -2.18 SCF%Rel, -1.94 CF%Rel.
Based on Fancy-stats, there is an absolute clear leader among the UFA Wingers: Loui Eriksson. 5.90 FF%Rel, 4.83 SCF%Rel, 6.10 CF%Rel. He leads pretty much every single fancy-stat category among the top 10 or so UFA wingers.
A surprising second place goes to Teddy Purcell: 4.78 FF%Rel, 4.13 SCF%Rel 4.16CF%Rel
He's out-performing his dynamic, explosive, amazing teammates on that Edmonton team. Makes me kinda curious about taking a poke at him in the offseason.
However, I've changed the guy I really want from Boedker to Okposo.
Two years older than Boedker, around the same size - a little heavier- but much better fancy-stats: 2.46 FF%Rel, 0.26 SCF%Rel, 1.08 CF%Rel
I think Eriksson will be too rich for our blood. He's clearly the best winger available, but his output is going to command a salary north of 6 million and I don't think that's feasible for us. Also, he's on the slender side. Put me in the camp of going after Okposo for pretty much the same deal we gave to Frolik.
