Not surprising. Although this decision backfired on a few pundits who believed the suspension would be reduced to 10 games.
Ride it out, Wideman will be a Flame next season and hopefully he can have a rebound season and become the #1 trade deadline day piece the Flames can move next year.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the timeline will be like for the 3rd party mediation on this? How many of the 20 game suspension can we expect him to serve once the mediation process is complete? 15 games?

Actually it makes more sense that they got it off of Wideman's phone.

Interesting that Bettman agrees that this was done out of anger. I guess not totally surprising but really shows that the league took this as an intentional and deliberate attack on the official.

How can that text be admissible? I'm sure Wideman knows who he sent that text to. This can't be a good thing for the locker room. Brady didn't give over his phone so why would Wideman and why would the NHL even bring his phone into an on-ice infraction?

I believe in the Jays.

I think it's really dumb that players can't play while the appeal process is ongoing.
I mean... what if an independent arbitrator finds in favor of the player and there should have been no suspension? Sure, he get's paid but it's not like you can nullify the results and replay the games where (in theory) that player might have been the difference between winning and losing.

Someone is busted in that locker room - and likely off the Wideman's Christmas card list for life!

No surprise here. I've moved on and don't really care. If plays again this year great if not great. This gets Nakladal into the line up I'm all for it. Feel for Widemen though as I do believe he is being made an example of.

Well, a call will certainly never be going in Wideman's favour again for the rest of his time in the league.

If they can subpoena texts for disciplinary hearings - that is crazy!

I don't know how an arbitrator could change it after what we have learned today.

I think it's pretty obvious that Wideman thinks he doesn't deserve a suspension, even after the proceedings. Frankly, I think that's fairly good evidence that this was a complete accident. If there was ever any intent, for even half a second, Wideman would likely say, "I guess a deserve a small suspension."

If that's the case then Wideman deserved the full 20 games for being stupid. Why would you text that knowing you were going to appeal?

Interesting:
Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Also: NHLPA acknowledged Bettman's authority to reduce suspension. NHLPA did not request reduction, maintaining no suspension was warranted.

Well, maybe to me, if anything the text kinda points me more in the direction that Wideman really didn't know wtf he was doing.
If he's accepting any blame, that points towards guilt. If he feels he didn't do anything wrong, how can that text message indicate anything close to intent?
It's consistent with Wideman's story at the least.

If texts can be subpoenaed then every NHL player now is going to have to carry a burner phone!!

when you really think about it, this was going to be the case all along, only the neutral arbitrator was going to reduce this suspension

So Wideman and Treliving didn't even ask for a reduction? Just a straight no suspension?
That seems crazy to me.
