Weird that Granlund is on the ice, if he was getting sent down he would have been gone already.
Either Ferland isn't ready, or something is in the works. Probably the former.

It makes perfect sense. Because Hartley hates young players and instead only dresses aged veterans like Monahan, Bennett, Gaudreau, Hamilton, Granlund, Ferland, Jooris and Brodie.

Seems like maybe the league will allow Wideman to go non-roster for the suspension?

I think Wotherspoon sticks in some minds.
Sorta crazy though. The flames have how many young guys Hartley has given rope to? Maybe 8? But hey that one super mediocre d man sat, so coach must hate young guys.

What Hartley has been known for so far from what I see, is that he expects the kids to work for their time. That means in practice, they have to work hard out there to be included in a lineup. Once they get in the lineup, they have to play hard in the games and not make too many mistakes (at least follow the game plan and the system). The better they play, the more ice they seem to get.
I don't really have a problem with how Hartley has been utilizing the young guys. He seems to have a good track record so far.

I'd love to be wrong and see what the club has in some of these players.

Wasn't Nakladal called up back in October? I believe he was because I remember the story about his wife coming to visit him in Stockton and she had to alter her plans and go to Calgary instead. He sat in the pressbox the whole time here and then got sent down without playing.

Wotherspoon showed he is not an NHL d-man. Why extrapolate that sample size of one, to make a broad generalization about the coach? When there are like 8 guys under 25 dressing night in and night out?

I'd like to see Nakladal play not just because I want to see what he can do versus NHL talent, but also so there's slight chance he'd consider re-signing with the club next season. If he doesn't get a sniff of playing time in Calgary I have a hard time believing he'd re-up after this season.

I see you haven't been following the AHL at all this year. Morrison is hot garbage.

He was called up in October but was sent down 8 days later. The flames played 4 games in that span so he could have seen action but other than exhibition games he had only played 2 ahl games prior to that. He didn't know the system yet and was new to North America. I would expect this time he will be given a chance since he has had half a season to adjust to the new systems. Not surprising he didn't get time back in October.

Yeah I think it was more that Hartley didnt trust Tyler Wotherspoon specifically rather than Hartley doesnt trust young players.

Right....cause if there is one thing we know, Hartley never gives young/new players a chance.

Ah yes, I forgot about that. I was just looking at the games played stats, so he didn't show up on there. He was up for 4 games (when the team was playing terribly), and didn't see any game action.
I don't think the same thing will happen this time around. Nakladal has been playing well in Stockton and the Flames need to see what they've got in him (and either turn him into trade bait, or convince him to re-sign for next season).
With Wotherspoon last season, from what I remember, the plan was to play him, but Hartley sat him the first game (which is standard) and Diaz and Engelland had a solid game together so Hartley didn't want to break them up. When it was clear that Wotherspoon wasn't likely to draw in very often, they sent him down and brought up Potter(?) to be the press box boy.

As per Hartley, a decision on his defence corps for the game will be decided later today. Jakub Nakladal is in #yyc after being recalled.

I'm talking about the blueline specifically here.
Assuming Wideman's suspension is 10 games or fewer, I think Smid and Englland draw in and stay in as long as players stay healthy. Nak stays as insurance.
For folks wanting to see a new guy play, I just don't expect it.

Yep. And now he's adapted more to NA ice after over a half season in the minors where he's done well. Back in OCT we were trying to make the playoffs. Now the playoffs are almost impossible. So Hartley may be instructed or advised to play the kids more down the stretch.
Plenty of reasons why this Nakladal recall could be much different than the first one.

I think once Nakladal gets acclimatized to the team and watches a few games from the press box, there will be a 3 man rotation through the bottom pairing until Wideman is back. Wouldn't be surprised to see him play Saturday night, or even Friday (at home vs. the last place team in the league).
