Glove save on Brodie sold them. I'd take him over either of our tenders.

I dont think they were ever going to let Talbot walk after giving up assets to get him, it was just a matter of how much and for how long.

Nilsson's an RFA so I think they'd probably try and keep him if they can. Good signing as Talbot has really come on lately with a .940 save percentage in his last 12 games or so I think I remember hearing.

Clearly his agent has done his homework. A year and a half or so and he'd be likely in the minors like so many other saviours (goalies and otherwise). Now the Oilers can't bury him there, and will have to ask for him to waive his NMC to get traded. Talbot get spared his eventual demotion to Bakersfield, no matter how badly he gets shelled.

So many here that "like" the deal, for some reason, seemingly based on how he did last night and in general as he not yet has a year's worth of Oilers despair on him.

But, in that case you, for some reason after all the continued documented fact, are ignoring the way that the organization 1)leaves goalies out to dry with terrible defenseman and clueless forwards, that after years of swearing they will get better, simply don't because they can't acquire players to play there via conventional methods and 2)how fans, media, and the organization treats players in general as far as the blame game, and how brutally quick they get when they fall out of favour.

Thats part of why I like the deal. I remember earlier in the year when he was badly outplayed by Nilsson. If he regresses back to that, which is far more likely than him maintaining this level of play, then they cant get rid of him.

Oilers gonna oil.

Not crazy.

He's done as well as anyone could reasonably expect.

Even early in the year when his numbers were taking a beating, I felt he was playing well.

Maybe they worded it wrong, maybe it was a "Nothing but Movement" clause.

Oh yea actually McDavid and Talbot were available for comment after the signing:

I disagree, $4.1 for a starting goaltender and a 3 year term is a pretty good deal, for the Oilers and for him.

I think though that if he contiuned to steal games like he has that he would have received bigger offers on the open market.

Make no mistake, this is a important signing for the Oilers public relations wise because you had an expected UFA signing to stay and play for that terrible organization.

He'll regret it.

This reminds me of Craig Button signing Roman Turek.

From this point onward, can we refer to this as the "Scrivens Protection Clause"?

Usually when speculating on signings, we talk about how the team may regret signing the player down the road.

I love how when we're talking about the Oilers, it's the player that may regret it.

Except Turek got a contract which paid him as a top 5 goalie in the NHL based on average salary. Talbot here is, what, 24th?

Sure, you could argue we would rather have someone other than all 3 of those goalies, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Off topic... Treliving's issue was that he had 3 birds in his hand and they all crapped at the same time. It's not a good situation having a hand full of crap.

Well, congrats Cam! You'll be making great money next season when you're the next Oiler goalie scapegoated and thrown on the scrap heap. When you inevitably go unclaimed on the waiver wire and you're on your way down to OKC or wherever the Hell the Coilers keep their prospects (anyone not drafted 1st overall) you can smirk to yourself and think of all those millions of dollars you get to spend courtesy of the worst-run sports franchise in North America.

That's why he has a NMC! He can go study at Harvard with Ference.

Somewhat of a gamble given the 3-year term -- at worst he's a good but very high priced backup (which isn't terrible if you've got a cheap plan "B" like Nilsson, although he has cooled off recently -- 3 or more goals against in his last 6 starts).

If he can continue his most recent play over the course of 50+ games per year, it will be a very good signing. His sample size is still fairly small though; earlier this season he had his own string of poor play (7 straight games of 3 or more goals against).

I think two years at 4 million would have been reasonable; because its the Oilers and they're desperate for goaltending he got the extra year. And because E=NG, he got the NMC as well.
