I usually give them one polite "No thanks, I'm not interested/busy/whatever", but then if they keep pushing they are asking for whatever abuse they get. If they are decent and say thanks anyway and goodbye, then I never need to be rude or hang up on them--their choice.
I also try to just not answer those #'s I don't recognize, but it drives me when the same one keeps calling-- I've had the same # call 5 times in 2 days. I finally answer it, and get the "it is the CIBC calling", well if this was really important leave a message on the first call and I'll get back to you. Don't keep calling but refusing to leave messages.

True, true and true. I'll politely say "no thanks or I'm not interested". I understand tyhat their job is to try to keep me listening with some sort of hook "but sir, this credit card comes with an introductory rate of 5%". I'll say "I'm just not interested"... If, at this point, they don't let me go, I'll hang up.
Sometimes, they get pretty annoying. They won't stop talking. Sometimes I wish I had one of those old phones that you can just fataing slam down. Not for all of them. But for some of them.
My phone has a special ring for long diistance. I hate it when I answer the ring thinking it might be one of my 6 or 7 friends or sisters that have moved away, and its a telemarketer.
The phone will ring again 20 minutes later, I don't answer, and I get an earful on my voicemail from my sister "why don't you answer my calls?".
Thats the biggest reason I don't like the telemarketing racket. Because I end up avoiding the phone. I pay for my phone so I can talk to people I like. Not to get solicited.
