according to capfriendly, LA has approximately 672,000 in cap space.
LeCav is at 4.5mill/yr
max is what? 50% retained?

Thanks, I misread that. Why in the hell would they do that?
Nonetheless the fact that they have the cap space for this still results in me

Which is what I figured but I still didnt think LA had that kind of cap space for two bad contracts.

Yeah it sucks they got out of the Richards contract but as a fan of a team in the same division I'm pretty happy about the trade as I don't see either of these players as being difference makers and I like the thought of the Flames facing a Kings team with Schenn on the blue line.

Even @ 50% retained, that's 4M they need to fit.

It's a little better with 50% retained, but I still don't know why they did it without getting assets back.
Lecavalier and Schenn both stink.

A life-sized table hockey cut out on a swivel is more useful than Lecavalier.

Epecially weird with both Lucic and Kopitar as UFAs needing new contracts
$2.25 of Vinny is wasted space even as a buyout

Lecavalier is supposedly going to retire after this season
Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Vincent Lecavalier will play for the #kings for the rest of the season and intend to retire at the end of it. Last season in the NHL.

Now it's being said Lecavalier to retire at the end of the season? Does that mean the cap hit disappears?!?

Vinny has another 2 years left on his deal after this... and even at 2.25M he's way over paid.

Aren't they and Philly still partially on the hook for the rest of his contract even when he retires?

His salary does drop to $3m next year... so I guess he could retire as his agent says he will. Makes a bit more sense for the Kings if that's the case although I still don't get it.

no... there is no recapture. The contract that had recapture was bought out by the Lightning.
The current contract he signed was before he was 35 so it won't count if he retires.

Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
#Flyers' buried / retained salary is astronomical: Vinny ($2.25M), MacDonald ($3.975M), Schenn ($1.8M), Gagner ($2.25M), Grossmann ($500K).

Amen to that, and Lecavalier patrolling their fourth line centre spot as well. Lombardi seems to be one of the few GMs in the league who still value lumbering, stone-foot defensemen

So basically LA gets some warm bodies for another playoff run with little cap hit for next year for a guy they were going to lose to waivers anyway and a 3rd?
Philly gets cap space now and a promising prospect.
