I will 3rd the Phoenix comments.

First time I was there was around 2010 with a buddy. We were smashed, so the rink didn't feel cold. Went back 2 years ago with my wife and kids. Went to the game and told the kids to wear shorts and t-shirts as i found the rink hot.

I was the only one that found humour in our predicament.
As someone who grew up playing there often, I wouldn't say Alix had good ice.

If its too cold the ice is brittle and not as good as you would think. I don;t know if you are trying to say they had good ice or not though.

My comment was that the rink was cold, no, freezing.

Not just arenas.

I remember going to a conference in Orlando in June at the Orange County convention center. This place is like a mile long, and they must have kept it at 10 degrees inside while it was high 20s, full humidity outside. I remember having to duck outside to warm up between sessions. By the second day, I brought a sweater to wear for indoors. Very strange.

Maybe warm places (LA, Phx, etc) have a colder "normal indoor temp" and their arenas follow suit...?

It's a bloody hockey arena; it's not meant to be warm when the ice is down. Cool it a bit to improve the ice conditions. Fans are still going to come to the game even if they have to wear a sweater instead of a T-shirt.

There's no way the flames are purposely keeping the building warmer, it's much more likely the extremely dated building HVAC system is just unable to cool the building anymore. They put that thing on full blast for concerts and it barely puts a dent in the building heat.

Is there a way to correct it via alternate means? For instance, after the Zamboni are gone the ice still seems almost soaking wet when players hop back on the ice between periods. I was always wondering if there was a way to have the ice cool faster via the use of some blowing fans behind the Zamboni or a hovercraft or drone type vehicle fly over the ice surface.

My only concern for something like this is that there actually is a lot of water on the surface when the wind blows which creates all sorts of weirder ripples in the ice.

I helped set up a rink inside a giant cold storage warehouse that previously belonged to a major supermarket chain.

I think we kept it about -4 degrees in there, and it was the best ice I've ever skated on.

Oh and the puck bounces "because that's what pucks do, has nothing to do with the ice" lol.

So basically he's got his head buried in the sand as usual.

Don't expect any improvement as long as we're playing in the Dome.

But don't worry Ken King once told me we'd be playing in a new arena by 2014....oh wait.

How he still has a job, let alone is the Pres, is beyond me.

From an '06 article:

Quote:
Dan Craig, the NHL's facilities operation manager, knows all about the Saddledome, having spent years in charge of Edmonton's ice. He said a steady stream of events through the 'Dome has wreaked havoc in what is one of the league's older venues.
"It used to be a building almost strictly for hockey but when you bring in extra concerts and things like dirt shows, monster trucks or rodeos, there are challenges," Craig said.
"Every single day, you have to be on top of that building, especially with how many events are in there. When you look at it, there are four or five events a week."
http://slam.canoe.com/Slam/Columnist...27159-sun.html

Too many events crammed into building, unseasonably warm winter this year, ambient temperature too warm...

It's funny that you can have heated floors installed in your own sweet home. Would it be possible to use some kind of cooling mesh for the floor?
I strongly disagree with Mr King, it's been an issue for a long time. I can understand the hvac issues etc for the old building, however it casts a shadow of doubt on his ability to pull off his new building when he can't even address or explain a long standing issue

That's how ice plants work. They cool the concrete below the ice.

There's a brand new ice plant as well installed after the flood repairs.

If they ran the HVAC system hard enough to keep up with the heat load from 20,000 people, Enron goal torches, jumbotron, "power ring" and all the other ancillary crap added to the building over the years they'd get bitched at fiercely for making the building too cold. They already do get bitched at, you wouldn't believe the number of people who complain—every single game—that the arena is too cold.

That said, the "terrible condition" of the ice is overblown. The ice is fine. Fans see bouncing pucks on TV and start bitching about "terrible ice". God forbid the problem is the team not the ice...

My parents used to have seats in 219. The odd time I'd leave my seats to go sit with them, I would freeze my bag off in their seats. The AC vents are aimed straight at them. I think a modern HVAC system would avoid super convecting any of the spectators.

They can make great ice as it's all about the building temperature. Those curling events there is nothing going on in the dome outside of curling for two straight weeks which lends itself to better conditions. They also likely reduce the temperature accordingly as curling ice requires colder temperatures.

So the ice like the team will be no good?
