Yes, the present situation looks awful, but the team isn't playing near its potential, and you know the future is bright. And not in the delusional oilers sense.

Mike Smith has been ridiculously inconsistent from season to season.
He always looks terrible when his team is terrible.
Fortunately for him, the Coyotes are playing very well right now.

Its been noted many times by GMs on record...shortage of D in the league so even if the Flames are playing poor I would expect D such as Russell or Wideman to still hold value based on supply/demand.

Russell's intangibles, including his leadership and locker room qualities, are far more valuable to a young team like this.
Wideman has been surprisingly good the last 2 1/2 seasons, but if I had to choose I would retain a bit of salary and ship him out over Russell.

I've been to every home game and watched every road game this year. I've focused a lot on watching Russell to see what he does to be such a shot blocking machine. In doing that, it's been "visually" noticeable how bad he has been in the defensive zone. I give him credit for being a hard worker, never giving up on plays, etc... but I've lost count of how many times he's been laying on the ice, flipping over and making a last ditch effort to get his stick in the way of a puck he's lost the battle for.
The this morning on the Sportsnet 960 morning show, Pinder pointed out that he has the easiest zone starts and the lowest quality of competition on the team! That blew me away. he's going to want a big raise and apparently people in the league see value in him, so I'd be more than okay if he were the one to be traded.

What makes Russell a better locker room guy/leader than Wideman?

McKenzie claims Wideman is the most likely tradebait and the Flames would prefer not to move Russell and re-sign him.
Claims a lot of teams have interest in Russell.

Don't: Make any reactionary trades with a focus on righting the ship this season. As much as some people kick up a sky-is-falling tizzy on this site, we're still early in a rebuild
Do: Move either of both of these players (and anyone else not in the long term plans) if the deal makes us better in the long run (even if it means short term pain).

I don't care who gets traded as long as we get a good fit for the team now and moving forward. I fear Wideman will bring back a similar bad contract upfront and the options to move him are limited due to the NMC. I think he has been solid for the Flames but with Brodie coming back it could be Wides or Hamilton on the third pair and that is not ideal (I am aware Dougie is currently on the third pair).
Russell I would be okay keeping under 4 years and under $4M per season. I think he gets the better return so I am okay moving him.
Flames have 7 D making more than $2.6M and can't score. They need to make a move and no one will give value for Smid or Engellend so Wideman or Russell it is then.

Colorado could use defence... Calgary could use a top six winger... Wideman straight up for iginla. Salary cap and term are a wash between them. I know the majority of people will not want this but I'm still one that wants iggy to come back.

I'd rather move out Russell than Wideman. Wideman is better at everything except blocking shots. Further I think both a Wideman +Brodie pairing and a Hamilton + Brodie pairing is far better than a Russel + Brodie pairing.
Gio - Wideman
Brodie-Hamilton
Smid - Nakladal
is what I'd like to see going forward.
I appreciate Russel's tenacity, but if there's a lot of interest for him, I'd trade him to the first team that offers a decent return.

It works out perfectly so whe the team continues to struggle we can just blame it all on Iggy again. That move reeks so much of the Oilers bringing Smyth back after they drafted Nuge

I expected that reaction. He's still a legit top six forward though and it seems like that's what most people are looking for the flames to add. I doubt Colorado has much of an appetite to trade him anyways.

If you can turn Russell and Wideman into any kind of asset, you go ahead and do it. Brodie is due back as soon as this weekend, according to the radio.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Well put.
It would be great if we had a legitimate scoring presence on our 2nd and 3rd lines. I'd be up for trading Backlund too at this point.

Watching Iginla tonight against the Panthers. He doesn't stand out in any way. Iginla will always be able to shoot, and he does some other things relatively well, but he's well past his prime and I doubt he improves anything for the Flames.

Lydman was traded fairly young. Not much risk of it there. Wideman is what he is and only going downhill from here. Russell is a UFA. No chance you are giving up a boat for curtain #3.

I just have a really good feeling about Nakladal too. I think he's ready to play some solid minutes and not make mistakes. Who knows, maybe he chips in offensively too.
Maybe it was his beard or his extremely charming accent, but I think this guy has got "it".
"It's a little big danger" haha so cute.

Of course he's past his prime... People have been saying that for 7 years it seems... but he still manages to score 30 goals year after year. He'll do it again this year. Pretty sure he was a plus player last season on a bad Avalanche team as well. Not many guys available that you can confidently say will put up those numbers. As a GM, I don't need him to "stand out"... I just need secondary scoring. Don't care how fancy the goals are. I just want goals. Again... He probably isn't available either for that exact reason.
