Disagree. So does Hartley. And so does Treliving. Plenty of comments saying they think it did.

Then there is the fact that several people talked about Hiller looking much more relaxed over the last 48 hours.

And then we get - by far - the best goaltending performance of the season last night. AND - by far - the best performance by the whole team last night.

Coincidence?

Lots and lots of reasons, not just the goaltending. But to suggest it didn't affect the team is, well, bizarre IMO.

Maybe it wasn't the biggest factor for the struggling, but as you can tell from Colborne's post game interview, sending down Ramo was the wake-up call the team needed.

I don't get why Ortio sitting in the press box was destroying the teams confidence. Did Hiller really need Ramo being sent down to play a good game? Lots of good games last year with him and Ramo coming in after a bad game. The practice time scenario is not great but I really hope leadership on the team is strong enough to handle having an AHL goalie in the press box.

I didn't see those comments. In fact, Treliving just said the opposite in the OP.

I don't doubt it played a role, but I think. It's being overblown

If you still don't get it after reading this thread and the goalie thread, you never will.

Just accept it and move on. We know you don't like Ortio and we don't care.

Whoever made more mistakes between Hiller and Ramo was going to the ahl. Moving cities, playing in a lesser league and maybe not ever seeing NHL ice again. That is a lot of unnecessary pressure to be under to start a season.

How do you not understand this?

So Granlund was under too much pressure because he knew if he didn't perform he'd be sent down? Raymond? Kulak? Shore? Was it unfair to Shore knowing if he didn't outplay the other guys he'd be going down? If a Goalie in the playoffs knows they lose and their team is out, is that too much pressure on them? If goalies don't stop pucks the team loses and if that happens often they'll have a hard time finding work. That's their reality.

Sorry, but that's been their plight since the beginning whether Ortio was there or not. It's certainly not ideal, but if that's the biggest reason I hope we don't make the playoffs because it'll be too much pressure to perform

Well, it might have not been directly responsible performance-wise for the funk that they threw themselves into at the start of the season... but what it did do was ruin everyone else's confidence.

Last year our tandem was solid enough to give our team a chance to win most nights, with the exception of a few wet-the-bed nights each. When we got down, the team would think "Alright, as long as we get the next one then Hills/Rammer can shut the door and we can come back". When you have a goalie that can't make saves that are expected to be routine, that really screws with your mental fortitude and your approach to the play.

If the Flames kinda go into meh mode again at any point or if Hiller really shats the bed during the road trip, then yeah it's probably an overblown issue. But given the way the team played last night and especially how good Hiller was, then the 3 headed goalie monster might have been more to blame than some people give credit for.

We could also pin it on Smid coming into the line up. Or Kulak going down. Or Hamilton going to the third pairing. Or other things that happened. Cause doesn't equal effect.

The whole team played better from zone exits to zone entries and clearing the net. There were 500% less two on ones against.

Again, I'm sure it helped to resolve the three Goalie monster. It wasn't the big catalyst though IMO

The biggest catalyst, was the on-ice leadership of the Flames Captain, Mark Giordano. Since the 3rd period of the Capitals game he has been the Flames best player. You need your best players and leaders to be your best players, everyone else follows that lead. Last night, our best player and captain was our best player. That's four periods and an OT of the best defenseman in the NHL. Everything else is a trickle-down effect.

Completely agree. Giordano is doing what captains must do. Lead by example. His play last night is so reminiscent of that Kings game in December when he took it on himself to get us the win. 2 OT winners. 2 serious losing streaks ended.

The mental game between the ears...

Now we just need to get some 2nd line scoring going. Still havent seen any real chemistry between Bennett and others. I think Colbourne is a piece of that puzzle but we are still missing the other.

Also, the Jack Adams winning coach is smart enough to figure out the Gio/Ham pairing didn't work. Brent rolled Bouw/Butler for full seasons.

Gio had a great game.

While I don't disagree with you that it shouldn't have hurt their confidence (Ramo and Hiller), but there is a huge difference with last year and this year.

Last year, it was just if you didn't play well, you were going to be the back up. This year, it was clear the Flames weren't going to risk Ortio to waivers, so Hiller and Ramo knew they were competing for 1 spot on Flames, and they knew the loser of the battle was gone, either traded or worse in the minors. That's a very different pressure then the guy on the bench will swap spots with me if I don't play well, which was last years scenario. It is disappointing that the added pressure brought the worse out of both guys, something to be aware of, but it certainly wasn't the same as last year.

I would like to see,

Bennett-Colborne-Frolik

Backlund hasn't impressed me much thus far and I thought Colborne and Bennett and good chemistry last year in the playoffs. Plus having Frolik who has the offence and 200ft game essentially replaces what Backlund has in a winger position. Bennett and Colborne can switch the center position when one is struggling

Well Raymond performed much better after being waived so it obviously was a factor of his performance even if his play didn't last. The rest were ahl bound anyways and not yet at the prime of their career so I'm not sure why you are comparing them to veterans being waived to the ahl. There is only 2 positions for nhl goaltenders so the writing is on the wall when there are 3 goalies on 1 way contracts.

did you really not have a stronger argument to make?
