The question was "Who is they?"
Almost everybody knows it was a cat. IIRC, it changed in the late 90s when Couche-Tard bought all the western Canadian stores.

Mac's stories:
1) When my buddy and I were about 13, we took the rubber mat that ran from the Oakridge Community Centre to the outdoor rink, rolled it down to the strip mall on Palliser Drive, then to the front door of the Mac's, blocking in the kids playing Joust. We thought it was hilarious. Then the the cops came, threw us in their squad car, and threatened to take us downtown and charge us. Then they took us home and did it all over again in front of our parents. My dad and I were reminiscing about this the other day, and my dad says the cop was winking at him while he explained that they might press charges, and all the while I was shaking in my rugby pants at the front door.
2) At one point the Oakridge Mac's was run by a Polish couple. Harridan of a red-head and her placid, browbeaten husband. Owing to her accent and demeanour, we called the woman "Mama Hitler," which really pissed her off. Many were banned. Her husband would never look you in the eye at the till, and mumbled while he gave you change. Once we realized he was just mumbling random numbers, it became one of our stoned things to get munchies and then listen to the guy mumble "fifteen, seven... three, nine... seven" while he gazed blankly over your shoulder and dropped change into your hand. He also didn't care if people shop-lifted. I suspect he indulged our hooliganism as a way to get back at his wife.

Those stories were good, but I thanked your post for the use of "rugby pants".

I've had this conversation with people who moved here as kids in the late 90s and early 00s. Makes me feel oddly old.

Will Circle-K keep the Mac's Tournament sponsorship?

My friends?
They changed the logo in '99 according to wiki. My friends would have ranged from 8-11 years old then.

I was raised in a world where every convenience store was called "Sev". I remember the first time I saw "Driving Miss Daisy", and she told Hoke to drive her down to the Piggly Wiggly. I was like: Bitch, that's a Sev.

Until this thread, I didn't realize that they stopped using the cat logo.

Hated when they changed the name to Froster. Froster sucks as a name. I still call them Slush Cats.

Doesn't really matter all that much to me. Would only go into them for a slurpee/froster. I had a Mac's near my place that changed into a Wink's a while back. They covered the machines with dumb flags for people to buy. Haven't been into that store since and if any of the other stores are similar I ain't bothering with them either.

I lived in Redcliff until I was 10, and the only convenience store they had there was a Macs store. They even rented out Nintendo games. I remember renting Guardian Legend. Man, that was a sweet game. Very fond memories of biking to the store and getting large slurpees during the summer.

Learned in this thread: Couche-Tard is an actual ownership group and not a spiteful nickname of said ownership group.

Yeah, it translates directly to "sleep late", but means "night owl".
We used to call it "the owl store".
