I don't know. I think it would totally happen to a kid name Jeff or Tyler. It definitely looks like a device that warrants an investigation by the teacher. I think they might have went a little crazy though. They should've realized it wasn't a bomb pretty quickly.
The thing is if it happened to a kid named Jeff or Tyler it probably wouldn't make the news.

The engineering teacher should have told him to retrieve it at the end of the school day to protect him rather than telling him not to show it to anyone else.
I don't mind the vetting of the device, but once you know it is a clock you don't jump to "hoax bomb".
That's where the racism comes into it.

Jeff or Tyler might get questioned, but they're not getting arrested.

I can understand an idiot teacher not knowing what a bomb looks like and calling the police, but surely the police would come, ask the kid about it, look at it for about 5 seconds, and realize nothing is wrong. The arrest doesn't make sense

As somebody who doesn't know much (anything) about bombs, I can understand why someone would think the clock looks like a bomb, or was intended to look like a bomb.
They just handled it extremely poorly.

Agree 100 percent. However I think the common sense we were all hoping for kicks in if the kids name isn't Ahmed. That's the discussion.

I have to say that the "going to meet my lawyer" tweet is kind of dumb.

Fixed this for you. I know that I don't get all of my opinions from a school district in Irving, TX. I'm assuming most Americans don't either.

Hooray! Peter is here!
Dude, celebrities can't even stop from tweeting their junk, marriages break up over facebook, and your jumping on a 14 year old kid for tweeting about a civil rights case against him?
Any excuse to push your agenda right?
Edit: don't know why I'm saying 'dude' today.

As somebody who doesn't know much (anything) about explosives, I can understand why someone would think the clock looks like a bomb, or was intended to look like a bomb. I don't really understand the purpose of mounting this clock in a case like that though.
The situation was just handled extremely poorly.

I agree. I think they were right to be suspicious and temporarily detain him to get to the bottom of it, but further charging him once it was sorted out was too much. I have no doubt that his race was why he didn't get the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, I know. People who indulge in generalizations generally don't appreciate being corrected.

It's a little ironic that if he goes to the White House the Secret Service will actually be checking the clock to see if it is a bomb

Then all you need to do is write a statement to that effect instead of altering my quote. Altering a direct quote in order to change the meaning is not proper form; I'm surprised this message board allows it.
Anyway...

Many of you (perhaps not you specifically, but 'you' as the general population) built this quilt of fear and deny that you want to live with the consequences.
I'm sure there are many, many more such examples. Reddit is full of them every day.

This town is just so full of red necks it's not even funny. If anyone else recalled, these were the same guys that freaked about some fake threats to implement Sharia law in the town

Yes the schools are paranoid. But most of that fear is still built on racism. Which is funny cause the people shooting up the schools are usually affluent white kids.
Racist, racist, racist.

Just to clear the air, I am not a racist.
I totally understand your point of view though. It could be racism very easily.
I think the same type of deal would happen to a white kid though. That was my argument.

I'm surprised you haven't read enough of this message board to know that it is kind of a 'thing' here to alter quotes for effect (not in a sneaky, underhanded or anonymous way of course).
In any case, since we're obviously being very serious now, I don't appreciate your generalization!

My apologies Cro. I was never for a minute implying you were. I was saying the situation is. No denying it. Very obvious. And Texas. Yeah kinda...
Was never directed at you.
