The license number isn't really going to help you track someone down since you can't run it through the registry system. Even if you had access, it's not legal.
Best bet to protect yourself is have full legal name in the contract, a valid phone number and email (if possible). I'd also have a potential tenant provide me with either a letter of employment or provide me with their place of work and name of a reference there. That way you now know enough to be able to serve them if required.
If you do decide to ask for a reference from their employer, don't bother calling the reference directly. Call the company's main line and ask the receptionist to connect you with the reference. Weeds out the people who give the number of their friends out. Same goes for previous landlords, I believe you can pull info limited to owner of a property from the registry.
