It's not really about Americans/Canadians not caring, it's just that this happened in China and the state controls the media. CNN tried to get a reporter in there but he was banned from going there. Tough to report when there's only details from one source.

OK, nuff with the doesn't care snide remark that I made. I didn't intend to derail the thread and it does seem in the last hour or so that this is starting to pick up and get the level of attention it deserves.

Hard to believe it was only 21 tonnes. Halifax harbour explosion for comparison was 2.9 KILOTONS. Adding to this, it seems there was a pretty toxic brew of chemicals that went up along with the explosion. Tianjin is the 10th largest port in the world, larger than LA or Rotterdam apparently.

Yeah apparently blog posts and comments on social media about this in China are being deleted in real time.

After seeing so much video of the Tianjin explosion last night it is very difficult to come up with a picture of what the Halifax explosion must have looked like.

There are some pictures of the cloud if you do a search, and some artist renditions.

Remember that on top of that size of an explosion, that construction was mostly wood and brick, it offered little protection when a blast waive that size cut through Halifax.

And to the above, China industries has a pretty poor record when it comes to safety and worker protection.

I would expect that we'll see the casualties accelerate upwards as people are reported missing by their families, but a lot of the victims were probably reduced to dust.

And with Halifax, (and Galveston Texas) everyone was out watching the fire burn on the ship(s) before the huge explosion. At least this happened at night and was relatively quick to go off.

We studied the Halifax explosion at school in, Halifax. If memory serves that have done models that show the water in the harbour would have been displaced and the bottom of the harbour exposed. That is a deep harbour.

The worst part about the explosion was the aftermath. A horrible winter that kills a lot of people as they were living in tents. The ability to put up emergency housing was nil.

What is being reported is a gasoline station fire exploded and when emergency responders failed to control the blaze it ignited tanks at a nearby chemical plant which exploded and ignited a bunch of shipping containers which contained more chemicals.

Police and firefighters at the initial gasoline station fire were pretty much killed instantly (accounts for all the missing numbers, probably burned/vaporized)

Here's a link to another crazy eyewitness video, if you're at work, turn down your speakers due to some very understandable NSFW language.

Conflicting reports are emerging that the death toll might actually be much higher than state media is reporting. Reporters for a large news outlet in HK say that, according to the police chief in the area, at least 120 emergency responders entered the initial fire, so far only four of those ones have reported back in.

Death toll should be at least 200 right now.

Maybe because it's easier to hold a narrow base vs a wide base? Especially when stuff is blowing up around you?

I really wish phone manufacturers would built sensors/software that corrected this automatically, but I digress.

You're holding the same width when you record portrait or landscape.

17 firefighters are among the 50 dead in the #Tianjin explosions. Dozens remain unaccounted for

First time I've seen state media admit that it's going to get a lot worse.

Yeah, if I was witnessing what that guy was witnessing, the LAST thing on my mind would be how many people are gonna be pissed off that my video is vertical, not horizontal.

Also, given that the explosion is vertical it's probably easier to keep it in the frame. But most likely in this case, viewer irritation about the orientation of the video was probably not to high up in his thoughts.
