Setoguchi opens up to Andrew Walker. Tells that he promised the Flames he would stay sober the whole season, but fell off the wagon a few weeks in. He thanked the Flames for giving him an opportunity and knows he blew it.

The Calgary Flames gave the Alberta native his second-last crack this time a year ago on a one-year deal, and he blew it after failing to live up to a promise to stay sober for the entire season.
“That lasted all of a couple of weeks,” Setoguchi told host Andrew Walker Thursday on Sportsnet 360. “When you’re a young kid making $3.5 million coming from not much, things can get out of hand quickly.
“I ended up going to rehab in April.”

Humbled by his decline (he failed to register a point in 12 games with Calgary), Setoguchi admitted he had clung to a “crappy,” blame-everyone-else attitude and he put on too much weight.
Re-focused, the winger said he is now under 200 pounds for the first time in nine years. He’s grateful GM Lou Lamoriello, whom he spoke to last summer as well, and the Leafs are giving him an opportunity.

Good luck to him. Hope it pans out. Really too bad Big Ern was not able to help him out any more than he likely did.

Took ownership of his mistakes and is being given another opportunity to prove himself.
Best of luck, Devin.

"First off, I have to say thanks to Calgary anyway. They gave me a chance. I told them going into camp that I was straight, I was going to stay sober for the year and not drink. That lasted all of a couple weeks. There’s a lot of things that went on there that were all me and my problems. I didn’t really take advantage of an opportunity with a team like Calgary. That was tough for me because I had a lot of expectations. I had a good summer of training but not quite as good as I have had this summer. I just went in there and had a crappy attitude. It was the coach’s fault, and then it was the guys’ I was playing with fault. Once I got sent down, it was everybody else’s fault. It was never my fault, and that’s when things turned bad. There was a lot of things in my head that I just needed to clear up; personal problems."
Best quote I've found. I respect the hell out of someone who can admit that.

I still think he has some talent and I hope being sober helps him find it. You can't help but pull for this guy now.

Respect the hell out of someone who claims responsibility the way he did in that interview. As someone who has made more than my share of big, stupid mistakes I can tell you it is really difficult to fully own up to it the way he did. I hope he finds success but either way I hope he is able to put his mistakes behind him. No need to carry them around with you.

"He signed a one-year $750,000 contract with Calgary for this past season, and says he told the team he was sober.
“That lasted all of a couple of weeks,” he added.
Setoguchi also said he had a “crappy attitude” with the Flames. He played 12 games with Calgary and didn’t notch a point."

So the question is, was he crappy because he started drinking again or he started drinking again because he was crappy?
The real answer is to stop drinking, so you can say you did your best.

Both? I would imagine a "few weeks in" would be pre-season.
And that Francis article is dumb. It's a PTO and it's a warm body if it seems like it pans out.
I wish Setoguchi all the best. Would have hoped he would have succeeded here though, but I guess it's worth hoping he will succeed in general instead.

Reports out of Switzerland say Devin Setoguchi is close to joining HC Davos -- Joe Thornton's old team.

Davos is a beautiful spot. Definitely worse places to earn a living playing hockey.

It's no NHL, but some Euro leagues are top notch hockey.
Hopefully he takes HC Davos seriously and stays away from the drink.

The Swiss league is respectable but nowhere near the level of compete (or contact) that you see in the NHL. Still enjoyed it when I lived out there, cheaper by far than going to see hockey in Canada, and that's in a city/country known for being expensive!
Best of luck to seto in Switzerland!
