he's a high motor player, and i think he became a bit of a non-factor down the stretch/playoffs, though i'm hoping that was just injuries.
he definitely did what he needed to last year to benefit another contract.

I liked Jooris, glad to see him signed. Hope he earns a 2 to 3 year contract after this one. Think he's a 3rd line player that can jump into top 6 if needed. Versatility is important.

how did he injure the wrist? I have absolutely no recollection when he went from #### disturber to non factor but it most definitely happened.

I've met Jooris a couple of times and he's super friendly and outgoing. I bet he's a great guy to have in the locker room. Good signing!

You need guys like Jooris who have speed and work hard every shift. When your team is not playing well its guys like that you can depend on to go out and create energy. He can also chip in goals and play the PK.
Good signing.

About just over 3m left to sign both Byron and Ferland. Should be easily doable. Ferland gets 1.25 for 2 years and Byron 1.25 for a year.

I like the one year term. It gives him incentive and the team options. If he progresses great, otherwise he's easily replaceable

Neither should get over $1M, but it's not a big deal if they do.

I highly doubt Byron gets $1.25 million. My guess is that flames and Byron work out a one year deal on the day of arbitration for $800,000 one year deal.

Both will most likely get a one year deal worth very close to $1 million.

I'm still not sold on Jooris, but at less than a mil for one year I don't mind this at all. He's got wheels, he's got heart, but if it came down to a choice between him and Ferland I take Ferland every time.

This thread has me wondering if all the "cap hell" posts are serious or are they lampooning the posts in the Bouma thread?

I see it this way:
If Ferland gets an offer of like 925,000 for 1 year that means he's up for renewal at the end of the year when the big cap crunch hits. And if he's going to perform in his first full NHL year the way I think he will, he'll be asking for something like 1.5-2 mil.
925k for 1 year screams "prove it deal" which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But he's going to very likely deserve a raise in the 2016 cap-crunch offseason - when Johnny and Monahan (and Gio's) new contracts kick in. I'd rather lock Ferland up for 1.25 for 2 years (Bollig's AAV for being a 4th line facepuncher) and then in the 2017 offseason (with its much needed cap relief) you can pay up for him if he continues to progress.
He's a far better option than Bollig, who I'd say is being paid as he deserves. The Vancouver series gave him a TON of confidence, super important in the NHL.

Guess I haven't been paying close attention, but didn't realize how close the Flames were to the cap.

Yep, it snuck up on me too. It's incredible how fast we went from discussing taking on a 5.75mil Mike Richards to get a good player or 1st round pick to being a cap team.
I have to keep pinching myself with the Hamilton situation. It's truly amazing how we went from a decent team on the upswing thinking about what might be in 3 - 4 years if we continue improving to all of sudden having a top 5 defense with 3, yes 3 budding star forwards.
I don't like predicting cups, but I honestly think we're headed towards being an annual contender in the not so distant future, and I think we're going to look back at this past season and off season in 10 years and go "Wow, that's where it all started".

Before the draft & free agency, we had something like 20M in cap space in the offseason (with Hudler, Jones, and a goalie leaving). Plenty of space to give Gio, Johnny and Mony raises. However signing Hamilton and Frolik ate up like 10 of that alone.
We'll likely have to get rid of a few of our other RFAs in order to fit those 3 in, if we can't unload Stajan, Raymond, or Engelland by the offseason.

The optimist in me says we'll unload two 3+mil contracts either before or during this season and then everything will be alright.
It wouldn't surprise me if Jones, Stajan and Raymond are played very regularly early in the season and we see a deal as soon as a team struggles with forward injuries.
