Where did you read that? First I've heard of it. So that entire area is pretty much Chernobyl?

BTW, did anyone else notice how that Winnipeg video shows summer scenes only? Not sure if I'd be in that square in the middle of January to watch a Jets game on a giant video screen. But that's just me...

Whoa now - cannot is a pretty strong word here.

First of all - 100% of the West Villiage is not in the red zone. This link here states that the worst of it is immediately east of the new Tower Chrysler (see pg 13) I'm sure you can appreciate there are varying levels of contamination throughout the West Villiage and not all of it is a "goner".

Second of all - anything is possible, it really just depends on funding. There are some great examples of contaminated areas of Calgary having to be cleaned up due to contamination. The Inglewood refinery saga and the Lynview Ridge cleanup (where Imperial had to buy out 140 homes and scrape 1.5m- 5m of soil from the yards of homes) fit this bill.

Indeed, if it's unfeasible to scrape and remove the worst areas - would the hard cap of an asphalt parking lot / some type of commercial public space not be the best means of containment / utilizing an incredible part of the City?

How's that as an angle for indirect government funding? No one will like funding arena but funding the cleanup of a long standing problem by multiple levels of government (like some sort of US Superfund) will be more politically acceptable.

Could even expand that further. Everyone in Calgary hates the bottlenecks around Bow Trail / Crowchild. Provincial Goverment funds road improvements, not the arena.

At some point in our lives that Bow Trail/Crowchild disaster will have to be fixed. I'm down for gov't funding for that - especially if it means using that area for a sports and entertainment district.

It always drives me a little nuts that when concept designs are put together for major urban projects like this in Canada, they always seem to show the site in midst of a sunny 30 degree day in summer.

Totally ignoring the fact that the vast majority of use will be in (at least in western Canada) at minus 15 with at least 4 inches of snow.

How come the designs don't show that? Especially in Wpg where it's more like 8 months of winter and 4 months of Canadark?

I assume these are all prepared by American architectural firms or something.

You just spent 102 words complaining about an artist rendering for a project that isn't built yet in a city you don't even live in

I can't wait until the plans for the new arena district are finally released. Living in the west I am extremely excited about the rink being on the west side of downtown and all the restaurants and entertainment establishments that will go along with this. In addition to the green line, Brookfield Place, Telus Sky, and hopefully the even larger Pxford project (rumored) and East village upgrades Calgary is taking great steps to transition into a truly "big city"

I guess? We're not supposed to comment on topics if we don't live in the vicinity?

I'm not so much complaining as just pointing out every time I see an artists' rendering of a project in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, it always seems to be summer.

After freezing my nuts off multiple times walking the covered bridge from the Dome to the LRT, you just think the design would incorportate... you know... winter?
