Great addition for Boston but then they trade Smith. Smart move followed by a idiotic one.

The Ducks offered him more money per year, but the Boston deal pays him more overall with an extra year included. Belesky probably knows that he's way overvalued right now, and chances are good he will not be $4M player by the end of this contract. He was trying to extract as much juice as possible from this contract.

All in all not a bad series of moves for Boston. Swapped Lucic for Beleskey and managed to pick up two firsts in that process, and finally got rid of that Savard boat anchor by swapping Smith for Hayes, who I would argue is a better fit for them anyway.
The Hamilton deal is a bit of a head scratcher of course, but it's starting to sound like that may have been out of their control anyway. Give Sweeney some credit here, he made the most out of a tough situation.

Damn, the Flames could've/should've taken him! For that price and that term, cripes that a helluva deal! C'mon Tre - Justin Williams - need a big right winger!

How many forwards do you want? They can only skate 12 each game...

Frolik is bigger than Belesky and Williams...
Also, how many forwards do we need? We already have:
Monahan
Gaudreau
Hudler
Bennett
Frolik
Backlund
Bouma
Colborne
Stajan
Jones
Ferland
Jooris
Granlund
Shore
Raymond
Bollig
Byron

Smith is crap, According to Bruin fans he was a complete product of Bergeron and Eriksson.

I watched a lot of Bruins games this year, and I wouldn't necessarily say he was crap, but he definitely took a step backwards this year. Still put up 40 points but wasn't the same player he was in 13-14. I don't think Boston will miss him much.

To see Don Sweeney improvising through the draft and the start of free agency in such a craptacular way make me even more happy that the Flames have Brad Treliving. Having a plan makes all the difference in the world.

TSN had Beleskey ranked a couple spots higher than Frolik on their top free agents list

That's odd because they are the same age and Frolik has played nearly 200 more games and has put up 40+ points in four of his seven years in the league, while Belesky has been in and out of the minors for most of his seven year career and was on pace for 40+ points once.
Is Belesky usually not a points guy and severely injury prone? Because it looks like he's missed 112 pro games (Unless I'm missing something)

Which means absolutely nothing as Beleskey was the flavour of the month forward coming off a career season on the last year of a deal with a solid playoff showing on arguably the 2nd best team in the league. Very unlikely he matches this season's numbers over the course of this deal.

Flames are paying for a lot of intangibles for Frolik
Belesky might be a one year wonder and 3.8 x 5 likely is an over payment.
Frolik at 4.3 x 5 ... being the highest paid forward on the team is not very comfortable....
Using Frolik's shiny new contract as a standard what are Hudler and Russell worth as UFA's in 12 months?

Frolik is getting 4.3 million, not 5.3.
And not sure why you are ignoring assists. Assists are an important Stat to include when looking at salary.

It's spelled Frolik not Frolick. Misspelling a players name this many times makes your arguments lose a lot of credibility.

To spell his name wrong once is one thing to spell it wrong 4 times in one post, especially when it's spelled properly in the post you're quoting, is a jack ass move. No to mention the way you're spelling it is insulting to him.

It's 4.3 x 5. And players on the Flames, like Jones, have already shown that 40-50 point players can get 4M+. Soderberg got 4.75M x 5 as a 29 year old and his career high is 48 points. Stafford got 4.35M and it's been 4 years since he broke 50. Frolik's better defensively than any of them, his contract isn't setting a negative precedent.

$4.3 million is not exactly a lot of money for the highest paid forward. He's probably one of the cheapest 'highest paid forwards' in the league. Our best forwards either signed for market value and got better (Hudler) or are on ELC's (Gaudreau, Monahan). Frolik will not be the highest paid forward on the team this time next year.
If Hudler has a similar year to last year (or even regresses a bit), he is going to get an enormous deal as a UFA. $7 million+.

I quickly checked and he's not only one of the cheapest - he is THE cheapest "highest paid forward" in the league and it's not even close. Montreal and Nashville come closest, as Plekanec and Nash both earn 5.0m.
ANA - 8.6m Corey Perry
ARI - 5.3m Shane Doan
BOS - 7.2m David Krejci
BUF - 6.0m Ryan O'Reilly
CAR - 8.2m Eric Staal
CHI - 10.5m Jonathan Toews & Patrick Kane
COL - 6.0m Matt Duchene
CBJ - 5.8m Brandon Dubinsky
DAL - 7.5m Jason Spezza
DET - 7.5m Pavel Datsyuk
EDM - 6.0m Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall & Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
FLA - 5.5m Dave Bolland
LAK - 6.8m Anze Kopitar
MIN - 7.5m Zach Parise
MTL - 5.0m Tomas Plekanec
NSH - 5.0m James Neal
NJD - 5.7m Travis Zajac
NYI - 5.5m John Tavares
NYR - 7.8m Rick Nash
OTT - 7.2m Bobby Ryan

Not to mention a whole bunch of those guys signed the deals as RFAs, so the low cap hit isn't comparable to a true UFA signing.
Frolik's is a relatively cheap deal, especially given his age.
