Some of it could have been Tim Murray inflating the market with some of the offers he was making.

I've noticed that every player he has traded for have been guys from the Eastern conference that he would be more familiar with.

No surprise there. The first moves new GMs often make involves players they are very familiar with.

I'm going to call west-coast bias here. I had a chance to watch him when Lundqvist was out and he was quite remarkable. He also did it over a long stretch (around 2 months IIRC), so it wasn't just a hot streak. He's good. He may not have a big pedigree, but I think he's a capable starter in the NHL. Maybe he won't be as good in Edmonton, but I think even Carey Price would look bad in Edmonton. All the smack-talk about a player very few around here have seen is a little ridiculous.

So the Oilers elect not to use this draft to stock a prospect base that is already mediocre.

I think it stems from the fact that he has never been a starter in the NHL. Even in the AHL, he only had one season where he played more than half of the games.

Not a bad gamble for what the Oilers paid, but I wouldn't be setting expectations super high. Both Scrivens and Fasth put up great numbers as back-ups on good teams before going to Edmonton. You can't blame people for expecting more of the same.

Playing behind that Rangers D, it would've been terrible if he didn't put up decent numbers. He still had some awful games. We've seen this before from Scrivens and Fasth before they got to Edmonton.

He has to go and prove it up there till then, he's no good.

I see your point, Cali. But I have to agree with the others. Talbot is a good goalie, but it remains to be seen whether he can handle the workload of being an everyday starter. Especially in Edmonton, where he'll see enough rubber to put Michelin out of business and take a run at Bridgestone.

Talbot's game log from last year: https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/4854/gamelog/

In spot duty early in the year, he had some average games (~3 GA per game) mixed in with three shutouts. Once Lundqvist went out, he started out pretty average again but was absolutely lights out for the first three weeks in March.

let's face it, Talbot posted those numbers with an unreal defense in front of him. Even 20 year old rookie Mackenzie Skapski came in and immediately posted fantastic numbers with that team, including earning a shutout in his second NHL game.

Talbots success reminds me a bit of Chad Johnson, who posted .925% and 2.10 over 27 games as Tuukka Rasks backup in 13/14. He then crashed and burned on Long Island, and that defense was MUCH better than what is awaiting Talbot in Edmonton.

This trade fixes absolutely nothing for the Oilers unless they finally address their blueline.

Sorry, not to pick on you here because I've seen this a couple times now.. but you know he played for the New York Rangers right?

He wasn't buried as the backup for the Muskenon Luberjacks of the USHL, he played almost half the games this season for the New York god damn Rangers.

I think a lot of people had the chance to see him play.

With that out of the way I think Talbot played great for them, kept them in it when their franchise bonafide number one goalie went down for an extended stretch. It was impressive. That doesn't mean however that people shouldn't be concerned or point out, pondering, if he can do it again. He'll be moving from the team that was 3rd in goals against per game to the team that was dead last.

Now I'm sure you're getting some usual Oilers hate, that's normal, but for the most part people are being fairly consistent. The same concerns posters had when he was rumoured here are the same being typed out now.

The east coast bias exists because those guys are going to bed when some west coast games are starting. On the west coast it's not as prevalent, we're arriving home from work when those games are starting. My Newfoundland living father was thrilled at that Hawk-Ducks OT game because as he was getting up for his morning 5am jaunt for coffee he turned on the TV to see highlights and the damn game was still on!

It's the Rangers, we're familiar.

Who are these Rangers of which you speak? Never heard of them.
