How a dad with NHL dreams bankrolled a hockey empire
Stuart Hyman bankrolled a vast hockey empire, buying teams where his sons played and even a scouting service that ranks NHL hopefuls.
From their earliest stick-and-puck beginnings, Stuart Hyman's sons have played on hockey teams owned and operated by their dad.
When the two oldest reached the junior level, they suited up for the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, another Hyman-owned club.
Now, with the two senior brothers in their late teens, their father has purchased a scouting company that ranks prospective draftees for a client base of general managers, coaches and scouts.
It's a cradle-to-National-Hockey-League development strategy unheard of in the hockey world.
Since the late 1990s, the hockey-dad-turned-entrepreneur has spent millions of dollars on his sporting acquisitions.
“It's mind boggling when I think about it,” said Hyman, a Toronto real estate developer and horse owner.
“Some people buy art and put it on the wall. I bought hockey clubs because it's a passion.”
Hyman's actions have raised eyebrows in hockey circles, where no one can remember a parent ever going to such lengths to purchase interests in the on-ice careers of their children.
“Hockey has not been faced with the likes of Stuart Hyman before,” said John Gardner, president of the Greater Toronto Hockey League, from which Hyman withdrew as an owner of more than 90 teams following a high-profile league investigation in 2004.
No one in Canada — and likely anywhere else — had ever before controlled such a vast collection of competitive kids' hockey teams.
At the time Hyman was accumulating his clubs, each of which included several teams of varying age and skill levels, the going market rate was estimated at $300,000 each.
“I'm different from anybody else because I'm a leader and I try to do what I think is right for hockey,” Hyman said. “Unfortunately, when you're a leader you always have people who are jealous and envious of you.”

Too bad for Hyman he chose a profession where talent actually matters. Can't ride the hype train of teenage girls and people who like crappy music to a successful NHL career.

Are you guys reading the same article I am? In the article I read his dad clearly explains how him buying all those teams actually made it harder on the poor kid to make it. What a trooper!
Honestly, what was the motive for Leafs to trade for his rights? From how it sounds, he would have no hesitation waiting until he's UFA and then making his decision based on who/if anyone is stupid enough to guarantee him an NHL roster spot. I'm not convinced that kid can be enticed/motivated with money, geographic location or some kind of boyhood/hometown loyalty.
If I were a Leafs fan i'd be concerned about what this says about the new direction of Maple leafs culture.
"Meet the new boss.
Same as the old boss"

I guess I was wrong, I never thought he'd sign without a guarantee ... Quite the team of character guys they're assembling there in TO.
