Even if you want to be svelt it's incredibly tough these days, go to most grocery stores and the majority of "healthy" foods have little to no nutrients because the soil is exploited beyond repair so to eat anything half decent tasting you need to cover it in cheese and salt or just go to a fast food place. Carrots don't really taste like carrots, broccoli doesn't taste like broccoli so of course people will get fat off unhealthy food. I'm nearly 100% a healthy eater and it is so tough to do even when motivated.

I hate when people go to the cliché rhetorical fat shaming defense. It's not about fat shaming, it's about overall societal health.

I agree with you 100% but it's only a part of the problem. A big part nonethless. However going by that logic, southern states where food is grown should have a lower overall obesity rate. Farmers markets should be more available year round. The far north and deep south seem to have the highest obesity. You would think a lot of fish would get eaten up north.

Well, this thread is a massive DA beacon if there ever was one. If there was a thread to bring him back, this is probably it.

But where the food is grown they are using capitalist methods that destroy the soil. Just absolute annihilation of the mineral content results in disgusting food, eating a carrot from nutrient depleted ground tastes like tree bark with a chemically after taste, I'd rather eat McDonalds because at least it has taste and a temporary energy boost.

The depleted foods do nothing, they are just fibrous matter with no real benefit. It's fairly common in Canada as well. Go into a Safeway and get some produce, a lot of it is disgusting. They aren't carrots, they are orange things that sort of resemble carrots. When that happens obesity and malnutrition is pretty much guaranteed. Real healthy food is supposed to have an abundance of flavour and nutrients, even the organic food I buy is often nutrient depleted. The rest of society doesn't really stand a chance at healthiness in such a scenario.

I've been quite busy. And I've been less interested in following hockey due to my team's general suckitude.

That explains why a lot of people are unhealthy and overweight. It does not explain why so many are obese. Because to get that big you no only have to eat crappy, fatty and sugary food - you have to consume it in massive quantities. Every day. And that's a social and psychological issue, not an economic one.

Again, these crappy foods are available elsewhere in the world. But outside the U.S., few countries have a culture where people eat and eat and eat all day long, and guzzle litre after litre of high-calorie sugar drinks. Part of it is social - in most countries people sit down and eat with other people, and eat almost strictly at meals. Gluttony will stand out. In the U.S., a lot more people eat alone, and eat continuously all day. Or they live in families and communities where relentless eating has become the norm. You can fix the food industry, but you'll still have obesity if people routinely glut themselves on a massive intake of calories.

The argument that eating healthy costs so much more than just junk food is basically bunk.

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/pre...sts-1-50-more/

Quote:
The healthiest diets cost about $1.50 more per day than the least healthy diets, according to new research from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). The finding is based on the most comprehensive examination to date comparing prices of healthy foods and diet patterns vs. less healthy ones.
For a family of four, that works out to about $2K a year, and this is comparing what they call the "healthiest diets" to the "least healthy diets", implying there is some sort of in between that most people would likely eat (mostly healthy with some junk mixed in). I'd imagine the price difference is even less in those cases. For something that is so important to enjoying life in general (i.e. having a healthy body), I don't think that is a huge investment.

I think it's just another excuse and people like to trot out to rationalize their behaviour.

Cheap processed food, as well as alcohol and pop are much cheaper in the states than here. Good quality meats, fruits, and veggies tend to be more expensive. This is one of the major reasons for the obesity epidemic down there.

Not that Canada is doing very well on this front either. Coming back from (continental) Western Europe or Asia will really open your eyes to how fat people are here. It's a real health problem that needs to be addressed.

Not so sure about that. If you only have $3 you can get, a couple apples or a bag of chips or a big mac or a box of strawberries.

For $4 you could get a few liters of milk or pop or juice.

Fyi, water which some say is the healthiest drink is almost free.

What i'm saying is, the price can be less or more. It comes down to choices you make.

Good luck feeling full from a couple apples. I don't think a box of strawberries would be a healthy meal either.

I agree with the water. The only time I drink anything besides water these days is when I'm drinking alcohol and whatever I'm mixing it with.

Not a comment on the state of the US system, but dam, if my wife was 166lbs and not pregnant with triplets, I'd be looking for a new wife prettttty quick. Mind you, she's shorter than average, but holy man that is quite large to be "average".

It's all about calories in vs calories out. I started tracking my macronutrients back in September and since then I have lost 20 lbs and 14% BF. I went from being 22% to 8%. I have been exercising regularly though, but in the end.... calories in vs calories out.
