$8 million for a one-dimensional scorer who doesn't give a crap about anything else?
Yeah, that totally fits the type of team we are building here.

Imagine Kessel during a Hartley practice? Would be comically pathetic

You can't deny his skill and if he had a different contract, he'd be a possibility but at this point it just doesn't make any sense for the Flames to get him.
As for being skilled yet fat and out of shape, I think if any coach and team are going to help him become less fat, it would be Hartley and the Flames.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Kessel became the next Heatley. Without the 50 goals in '07 of course.

The negativity around Kessel is overblown. I know a lot of you think about how out of place Kessel would be in a Hartley system - but could you imagine if Kessel got into shape?
I believe in Hartley - and part of the reason why is that he can get a lot of his players.
Everyone is on the Wideman train these days, but he was a healthy scratch and was noted as being out of shape prior to the 13/14 season. Under Hartley, Wideman has become fit and is playing the best hockey of his career.
If Bob could do that with Kessel? That'd be a huge win for our organization. Kessel as-is, remains one of the best snipers in the league. Under the right guidance, he could be much, much more.

Like I said, I think if he's going to turn it around, it would be on a team like the Flames for Hartley. His contract is beyond horrible. It's hora-awful!

Unless we completely fleeced the Leafs & they retained loads of his salary I would hope Treliving has enough sense to steer clear.
He had a pretty bad season by his standards. I know the Leafs were shockingly bad but -34 is inexcusable. His 13-14 season was very impressive though. Which Kessel do you get? I don't think I would want to roll that dice.

Most people know what Kessel is and what he isn't. It's the contract that is the problem.
I'm sure Bob could make it work worth Kessel, since Kessel has the talent. But while he's got that boat anchor contract, Flames should steer clear altogether.

Kessel + 4th overall for David Jones or bust.

ya, I think if we didn't have his contract I would be interested. But no way TO retains any of that salary, so steer clear as CroFlames said.
We will find our top line RW soon enough, just need to be patient!

Not even for free. His cap hit doesn't justify his play and he's going to hit a steep cliff in play in the next couple years. It really doesn't matter how many goals he scores.
Hate the way he plays, he is Taylor Hall but 4 years later and in much worse condition.

If the Leafs retained half of his salary, which there is no way they would, he'd actually be a decent pick up. 4 mill for a guy who can score as much as he can would be a steal. It would suck at the end of his career but it wouldn't be that bad.
I'm all for it if the leafs retain half the salary. I wouldn't give up Monahan, Bennett, Johnny, Brodie, Gio, this years first or anything that they'd want though.

At an AAV of $8 million until 2022, that is not a risk I want to take.
Also, leopards rarely change their spots. Kessel had questions about his work ethic when the Leafs acquired him, and those questions have dogged him consistently since.
Phil Kessel is not a guy you win with.

No thanks. That contract is disgusting and he's lazy. Wouldn't make it through camp under Hartley.

I think it would be a good move if he were available for ~65 cents on the dollar at full salary. He's an elite winger in this league, and if given a centre better than Bozak or Kadri I think he could reach heights that he hasn't before.

Mind explaining how you came to this conclusion? The man has had relatively little help in Toronto. Pair him with good players and he'll purr.
