Wow. Way too much cash for Petry. Good on him for cashing in.

His cap hit is roughly the same as Duncan Keith's.

Duncan Kieth's contract goes until he's 39 with classic cap circumvention salaries after age 35. If you took a 27-year old Keith, then calculated Keith's cap hit between when he signed it, and when he turns 33, and then added in the inflation since he signed it, his comparable cap hit would be 9.9 million for the next six years.

If Keith's cap hit were 9.9m, then does 5.5 for Petry really look all that bad?

You can't get away with cheating the cap after the 2013 CBA.

That's pretty crazy. Thanks for that info.

Both term and $$ too high, throw in a no-trade clause to boot.

He is not a bad hockey player, that is just a lot of money for Jeff Petry.

Yeah I could maybe stomach the money over four years and even at that I think it's on the high side for a guy that's a little on the soft side but if he slumps or declines there's no way out of that contract.

One good thing is that this should put the price and term up considerably for Franzen and hopefully prevent the Flames from signing him.

And the thought process is the Leafs will have to eat 3 million + per on Dion's contract. LOL.

The Jeff Petry's now get 5.5 million.

Who is out there? Off the top of my head:

Dubnyk (better than what they have now)

Smid, Petry, NSchultz, Souray, Gilbert, Potter (better than what they have now)

Hemsky, Horcoff, Gagner, Cogliano, Perron...

who have I missed?

I think we definitely have the makings of a team that would beat the Oilers.
*sniff* Jarret Stoll *sniff*

I mean *cough* Jarret Stoll *cough*

...no I dont

On contract, will this be their next Emelin contract?

I realize you are just trolling for validation as usual, but honestly, I would rather have Petry at $5.5 million than Phanuef at $7 million.

Hell, I'd rather have Petry at $7 million than Phaneuf at $7 million.

And citation needed on your claim that "the thought process is the Leafs will have to eat 3 million + per on Dion's contract." Provide links or get lost.

I'd take Petry over Phaneuf on their current deals. It's not even close really.

Agreed, If you're going to pay Petry 5.5 mil a year it can only be on a 3-4 year deal. It's going to be a huge anchor in a few years.

Are we going to have to pay Russell more than this?

Forget being a LH pitcher... Start training your kids to be a RH shooting defenceman

Seriously though -- if you're looking to upgrade your top 4 via the UFA market, prepare to pay handsomely. Really puts the emphasis on developing your own talent -- I'm looking at you Wotherspoon.

The Habs always seem to have to pay UFAs a little bit more.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with them having the highest income tax rate in the NHL.

Makes sense. I'd put Wideman and Petry on the same level as players, so take into consideration some slight inflation and it makes sense.

This is why developing internal talent is so bloody important.
