I still can't believe this kid plays for the Flames. I feel like I'm watching a Patrick Kane highlight reel. He is crazy good.

Joey Mullen, the broad street kid - also from the US. But, Johnny Hockey's got the moves going into the offensive zone. Mullen was unbelievable during his time in Calgary.

It's so nice to have skilled players that do more than just dump and chase into the offensive zone and continuously chip the puck out the defensive zone. Look forward to seeing Johnny flourish in our system for many years to come.

If he can get the wrist problem sorted out in the off-season, hopefully he will.

ALMOST done! Looks like I'll get it down to 26 minutes, but no less than that.
46 minutes combined of highlights from one player... oh jeez.

That's heaven, especially since it's Gaudreau.

So many of those highlights are 2 or 3 defenders chasing Johnny and opening up golden opportunities for other guys. I'm still amazed at how shifty he is. He spins off checks at the last possible second and his acceleration can have him going from stand still to open ice before the defender even realizes the only thing between him and the boards is air.

The thing that really stands out to me is his avoiding contact after he releases the puck. Theres almost always a defenceman sick of all his moves and closing in on him to give him a big hit as soon as he lets go of the puck and as soon as he passes it - he spins or moves out of the way. He doesnt watch his passes. He literally switches from passing to avoiding a hit as soon as the puck is off his stick. Its amazing to see what almost 2 decades of playing bigger opponents can do and how he has adapted his game very very well. Also nobody wants to play him closely or try and cut his ice off and check him. They seem to all want to just give him his space and backpedal, even some top quality d-men in the nhl have been scared off by his speed and hands and it gives him the perfect time to show his biggest weapon imo - his vision.

^ further to your point about making defenders miss: everything he draws a defender to close, he dishes and spins away. This allows Gaudreau to accelerate and attack the hole he just created, or allows another player to advance on that same hole with speed. It's an absolutely effective way of breaking down defensive systems and can cause other teams fits. What the series against Anaheim showed however is that the best to stymie Gaudreau is to take away all the time of his linemates. You become much less effective if your team isn't controlling the puck.
