Over the past number of years when the Flames haven't made the post season my biggest enjoyment has been watching the Canucks and Canadiens be eliminated. The Stanley Cup isn't a national trophy so screw them and their obnoxious fans.

The next time Canada competes for the Stanley Cup will be the first time. It is not an international tournament, it is a club tournament. Not a single one of these teams does now, or ever has, represented the country.
Cheering for the Canadian team just because they are Canadian is nothing more than a manifestation of an inferiority complex.
That said, I don't agree with the suggestion that to be a "hardcore Flames fan", one must cheer against the other Canadian teams. I would always cheer against the Oilers and Canucks because I hate them and their fans suck, but if it came up as someone like Montreal vs. Pittsburgh, I'd probably cheer Montreal since I dislike them less.

I've always found it funny and disturbing how much animosity there is for passionate hockey fans from other markets. Even against Anaheim, who we don't have a whole lot of animosity towards, there were many comments about hating an old man who would point his "guns" at the camera after a home team goal. Seriously, we're now hating old men who make an innocent gesture?
It's different if it were the Oilers or the Canucks, who are true rivals. It's different if you truly despise the team and it's players. However, there are people who hate the Leafs simply because they are covered more by the media than the average team, or god forbid, the Flames. Why do people even care about this stuff? Wanna talk to me about little to no media coverage? Try being a Florida Panthers fan too.
This whole thread is just sour grapes. "If we can't have it, NOBODY can!" Get over it everyone.

I just find myself naturally cheering against the other Canadian teams and I'm ok with that.

I thought the Oilers already won the cup, since the MacDavid announcement?

The Oilers and Canucks are our #1 and #2 rivals. We battle them all season & bicker back and forth with their fans. I would never, ever cheer for them. Ever. Are you telling me you cheered for them in 2006 and 2011? If so, then yes. It does diminish your statis as a Flames fan. Not sure how you can be a Flames fan & cheer for the Oilers and Canucks at the same time.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for the other Canadian teams as we don't really have that big of a rivalry with them. Personally, I would never cheer for the Leafs and Canadiens. As for the Sens and Jets, it depends on who they are playing. If I like the American team more, I'll cheer for that American team. But I can see us gaining a rivalry with the Jets again and I would assume they may get in the same category as the Canucks and Oilers soon enough.

When it comes to the NHL it's never been about where the teams are from for me so if no Canadian team other than the Flames ever wins the Cup again I'm perfectly fine with that since teams are full of Canadians anyway.

No Canadian team has won in 22 years because no Canadian team has ever been able to win 4 games in the Stanley Cup final.
I used to obsess about a Canadian team winning the cup. But as I've gotten older, the Flames are the only one that matters. No NHL team is ''Canada's team'', including the Flames. You cheer for Team Canada if you want to cheer for Canada's team.

You don't get it because you live in the States. You don't have to listen to rival Canadian fans prattle on and on all season about how much "better" their team is and how the Flames suck etc. Playoffs will always rile people up but I don't care about the Ducks or any other US team because I don't have to deal with their fans on a daily basis.

I do believe it is an important fact. It's like the Champions League in Europe. If a domestic team does not win the big tournament once every few years, fans end up believing that their league is less than the other countries in terms of quality.
It is one league in the NHL but we are two countries. It is really amazing to see how 22 years have transpired without a win from any market. Yes the majority of the players are Canadians, but it is interesting looking at the facts.
Is it:
-Weather?
-Higher taxes?
-Low Canadian dollar
-Poorly run franchises
-US clubs that were essentially dynasties for 22 years back to back to back
-Bad luck

Until 5 years ago I was living there, and had been for 30 years. I didn't suddenly forget when I moved away. Plus, I still have many friends of rival teams that still live up there, and I talk to them pretty regularly and they still try to give me the gears about the Flames.
If you can't handle other fans either denigrating your team, or pumping up their own team, then you really have too thin a skin to be a hockey fan in Canada, or really a fan of any team anywhere. Toughen up.

I'll just point out that this argument is borne of the exact same inferiority complex that leads people to cheer for Canadian teams simply for being Canadian.
Nationality simply doesn't matter in this regard.

Simple. It's called random probability. Sometimes it's more random than you'd like or expect.

I don't think I said I hated him, but I sure posted about it negatively. It was because they showed him every frikkin' time.
On the main question, there were different reasons for non-Canadian wins over time. In the 90s, no cap and the low Canadian dollar made several Canadian teams, including the Flames, uncompetitive as far as the ability to sign good players or hold on to those they drafted. Calgary had to let Newy, MacInnis and Fleury go, while they were either still prime or at least still great.
As was mentioned, Calgary should have won it in '04, and the Oilers could have in the next season.

Ottawa and Vancouver as well. I think Calgary and Ottawa were the two teams most screwed over by that 04-05 lockout.

I stand by my hatred of the old man doing the double guns at the camera after every Ducks goal.
To be fair I also dislike a few Flames fans that always get shown after our goals. Especially the bigger guy on the glass that seems to be a Preds fan first. And the mustached trucker hat guy because he always acts so smug.
