Karlsson confirmed underrated. He's more than just his points.

Maybe he's not terrible defensively, but take away 20% of his points and he's just a second pairing defenseman. Like Dennis Wideman.
Hell, Dennis Wideman's season wasn't a whole lot worse than Karlsson's. And he's our #4.

Thats true, or they dont have to give every special snowflake their own award. If you're a PP or offensive specialist defenceman then maybe you make peace with the fact that you wont get to hoist your own trophy in Vegas.
Its the notion that goals put butts in seats that have caused this shift in priorities.

The Norris is the biggest joke of all the NHL awards.
Seriously ruins the credibility of the hockey media.

Should have been Gio, Weber, Karlsson just based on how they actually put up great numbers and good defensive numbers too. Plus the teams Calgary, Nashville and Ottawa did fantastic with those guys.
I know Gio won't, shouldn't have won it but he should have been given a nomination at least.
Weber too. Fantastic guy who really leads his team all year.
Shame on the NHL.

I would have to go with Doughty as I don't feel the other two are complete defensemen.

Drew Doughty: 29 minutes a game for 82 games makes him worthy of consideration in my book.
Don't watch enough of PK to comment.
Byfuglien I thought could've been a darkhorse for MVP. Moved up and down the lineup with constant injuries to the Jets lineup.
What's with all the Weber love: Josi had a better season.
Brent Burns had a great year, but his team slipped off.
Wideman, Russell, Brodie stepping up bigtime hurt Gio's chances in the end. Too bad; definitely the favorite while he was healthy.
|
No he isn't...and it not even debateable. He may be considered one of the best offensive guys, but best overall? Literally 15 guys ahead of him.

So has this award turned solely about what defenseman accumulates the most points? Certainly feels like it and it's a shame that the actual craft of the position is kind of being overlooked as there are much better rounded defensemen than Karlsson and Subban that also score points but can shut down other teams best forwards.

Gio doesn't possess the ability to take a game over like Doughty can.

My vote would be for Doughty to win out of the 3. Doughty, Weber and Keith would have been my 3 nominees.
Don't think Subban for sure should have been nominated.

Yet Doughty's team didn't make the playoffs even when he plays all 82 games. And the Flames do it without Gio...
By the way:
Dennis WidemanCGY 80GP 15G 41A 56pts 6 +/-
Mark Giordano CGY 61GP 11G 37A 48pts 13 +/-
Drew Doughty LOS 82A 7G 39A 46pts 3 +/-
What a joke the NHL is becoming...

I think Karlsson and Subban are actually underrated on CP.
They play a ton of minutes, put up points, and are regularly matched up against the opposition's best.
I'm not saying I agree with these noms.

Well I was using hyperbole in response to his own...but all guys I would consider better rounded and more complete than Karlson?
Weber, Keith, Doughty, Letang, Giordano, Suter, Ekman-Larson, Hedman, and relunctantly Subban.
Beyond that there is a whole bunch of guys in the mix with him imo as far as complete dmen go but his skating and offensive abilities do separate him from them.

This award would be Gio's if he stayed healthy. That being said, Karlsson carries the Senators. Way underrated in this thread. I bet he wins.
