Just beat BSB on my first try. Thought he wasn't bad at all. Only realized by the 2nd form that I had a use for antidotes and didn't have them as part of my quick select. Trying to add that in the middle of the fight probably isn't the greatest idea.

I also recommend weaving in and around the columns, gives you some key breathing space now and again. In the last form, get space and pick your attacks wisely. Two hits then out. Don't get greedy.
Fire paper on your weapon helps.

Alright, I got this gun thing down, using pebbles to pick off that large group one at a time, things are looking good...
Dogs? Goddammit.

The key to leveling up is getting something called "insight". Once you get 1, you can then level up in the Hunters Dream (starting area from a woman standing there).
How do you get the first insight? Either meet the end boss (every boss you meet gives you one) or find an item.
So, for you starting, the recommended way is to fight your way to the Cleric Beast (after the two nasty big wolves). If you are getting frustrated, just try running. Run past everyone, and run to the last boss. Then you die. But then you can beat some guys, go back to the lamp, and cash in your blood echoes and level up a bit.
I recommend you fight your way there to get the bloodborne timing, but know you will die and have to do it again. Once you can start leveling things get better (but still ruthless)

Dog shouldn't be much of a threat to you at all -- they are fast but have very low health/defense. It's easy to separate them from the group (bounce back a few steps and they'll charge ahead at you), dodge their attack, and then take them down in 2-3 fast hits even at a low level. Then you can deal with the rest of the group as they saunter up.

So after using the Saw Cleaver all game, I just picked up Ludwig's Holy Sword last night. I don't know if I will be able to use this thing. The smaller form doesn't hit as hard, and the bigger form is so slow I don't think I will ever be able to get a hit.

^ I keep reading that Ludwig's is BY FAR the best weapon in the game. I haven't seen it yet myself. I've been quite happy with my Kirkhammer & I also just picked up the Tonitrus but haven't really got a chance to mess around with it much.
What kills me about this game is that I know there is sooooooooo much stuff I'm missing or not aware of. For example, I got stuck on a boss (5th/6th/7th-ish boss, fight in a watery area) and felt like there was nowhere else for me to go other than to try and finish that boss fight. I sort of got fed up after 3 or 4 tries because of the load times so I ended up just going back through the first parts of the game trying to see if there was anything I missed.
I ended up spotting an enemy I didn't recognize in an earlier area even though I had been through there many times previously. I don't want to say much more in plain-text lest I spoil anyone but

From what I've seen in playthroughs lure the enemy toward you and time the charge attack thrust to when he walks into range. That will stagger them and you can heavy bash.

Ended up in the Unseen Village...probably shouldn't be fighting that boss right now.

I never minded the reloads too much as it allowed my mind to rage and then start formulating a plan. However, it may have presented more opportunity to quit, whereas now it will make it even easier to do it "just one more time"

yeah, its funny, once it kicked into its beasty mode, I kept having issues... a buddy then told me you can hold "o" in order to run...Doh... it helped but i still got killed a lot due to the poisoning...
so, i ending up grinding through some of the previous levels, just gain some blood echos to level up...
Turns out the even for those that play offline, you can still summon an AI NPC (Alfred) to help you out...once i did that BSB was easy.
got a bit sidetracked due to the playoffs, but glad to start playing again...
its' even made me think about picking up the rejigged Demon Souls game...

You mean the Dark Souls 2 remaster?
If Bloodborne is your only experience with the series, it will feel like a step back in a lot of ways. Plus while the HUD and UI elements are almost exactly the same as Bloodborne, it is quite a different game moment-to-moment. It's way more about taking your time and being more defensive.
What drives me nuts about these games (I guess Bloodborne in particular since it's fresh in my mind) is that there is just SO much you can miss. I am nearly at the end (I figured I was anyways, but got stuck and went to a guide which confirmed it) and just reading through some of the sections there is a TON of things I missed. Lots of people I didn't talk to and items I didn't pick up.
I also feel like the game is quite a bit shorter than the previous couple. I am at almost exactly 30 hours played and I expect to be done in another 5-8 at the most. Which is still a decent length for a game, but I played Dark Souls for 40+ hours before I got to about the halfway point.

yeah, sorry, that's what i was thinking...hoping that it gives a similar feeling as bloodborne...but you never know i guess...it sounds like the fighting is a lot more tactical due to the blocking mechanic...
i guess now, after trying and really loving Bloodborne, i sort of feel like i ought to give it another chance...
i know what you mean about missing things tho; there's just a ton of stuff out in that word... playing online helps with all the notes etc, but just makes me think that a new game + play through would be worthwhile

So what has been everyone's favourite boss fight to date? Im very curious how many people that picked this up have finished it.
As a souls vet of the previous 3 games, I actually found the game not to bad compared to Demon/dark souls 1/2, but I can imagine someone new to the series may find it pretty hard to get through.

haha... i don't know if 'favorite' is the right word!
I've only gotten to the Forbidden Forest... so i haven't had to face many bosses really. I did find the BSB to be really hard because of the poisoning...once I figured out to summon the NPC, it was easy tho... i loved the Cleric Beast just because it was the first, and as someone that has never played the DS series, it was pretty amazing to see how imaginative it was
i think the game is just so beautifully designed... all the enemies are really grotesque but fascinating too...
hoping that this world get some DLC or a sequel down the road...

I just realized talking about bosses could be a spoiler, so I guess make sure if your talking end game to use spoiler tag.
For me the game really hit a new level post-Rom fight:
Reading fan theories has been a ton of fun, one guy put together an 80 page novel on backstory of the game.
