I hope Gillies is not a huge contributor. That means Hiller and Ramo turn to swiss cheese, or they're both injured.

Also Ortio.
I think Gillies has a strong future, but we have 3 very good goalies ahead of him.

That is why it is one of those 4.
After the NHL regular season ends, teams have an infinite number of regular call ups as long as they don't have more than 3 regular recalls on the active roster.

Funny you should mention this as I just had this very debate with a Pens fan on Reddit yesterday. They noted that Pittsburgh currently has five guys recalled post-trade deadline (three came up yesterday, iirc). My thought process was the same as yours - but in this case, "active roster" might mean the game roster.

Hearing Jon Gillies is in Vancouver to watch #Flames in the playoffs. Good learning opportunity.
If true would mean his contract would start next season and Flames would not have to make any corresponding moves

Doubt it:
Quote:
"Active Roster" shall be determined as follows: Commencing on the day prior to
the start of the Regular Season, and concluding with each respective Club's last NHL Game in a
League Year, Active Roster shall include all Players on a Club's Reserve List who are signed to
an approved and registered SPC, subject to the provisions of Article 11, and who are not on the
Injured Reserve List, Injured Non-Roster, designated Non-Roster, or Loaned. A Player who is on
a Conditioning Loan is included on a Club's Active Roster. During Training Camp, a Player shall
be deemed to be on the Club's Active Roster only if he had been on the Club's Active Roster
after the Trade Deadline in the preceding season on other than an emergency recall basis.
|
Quote:
16.4 Active Roster Size; Playing Roster.
(a) There shall be a maximum of twenty-three (23) Players on each Club's Active
Roster at any one time, provided, however, that, on the date of each season's Trade Deadline, a
Club's Active Roster may be increased to any number of Players the Club, in its discretion, so
determines, subject to Article 50.
(b) Clubs are not permitted to Loan Players where the result of such Loan(s) would
reduce the Club's Active Roster below eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goaltenders. However,
Clubs will not be required to Recall Players to maintain the minimum eighteen (18) skaters and
two (2) goaltenders on days which they do not play an NHL Game, provided that the deficiency
below those thresholds is a result of an injury that has caused the removal of such disabled
Player from the Active Roster.
(c) Except in case of emergency, there shall be no reduction of the required minimum
Playing Rosters of the Clubs, below eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goaltenders.

Stockton's goaltending is sorted for next season! Happy Gillies has signed. I don't think I've seen a young goaltender with the poise he has since Carey Price. Not saying he'll be as good but Price was cool as a cucumber leading up to his pro debut too.

Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
There's a tall goalie will a plain white mask on the ice at end of #Flames skate -- Jon Gillies.
Wes Gilbertson @SUNGilbertson
I would expect confirmation from #Flames on Jon Gillies signing very soon.

The Calgary Flames announced today that they have signed goaltender Jon Gillies from Providence College of the Hockey East Conference.
The South Portland, Maine native played three seasons with Providence in Hockey East and was drafted by the Flames in the third round (75th overall) in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. In 38 games during the 2014-15 season the 6’6”, 225 lb. netminder led Hockey East in goals against average (2.01) and save percentage (.930), he was honoured as the 2014-15 Hockey East Goaltender of the Year, and he was named the NCAA Division 1 Tournament Most Outstanding Player in leading Providence to the national championship. Over his 108-game NCAA career he recorded 60 wins, 13 shutouts, a 2.08 goals against average and a .931 save percentage.

Randy Sportak @SUNRandySportak
Gillies went on the ice just as some players trickled off from #Flames practice. There was a reason for the holdup.
Randy Sportak @SUNRandySportak
From what I’m told, With Gillies signed. Ortio must return to AHL since he was on emergency recall.

If that is the case and Ortio has been sent down, then Gillies contract starts now.

I guess Ramo is 100% then. I hope they didn't rush him back too soon.
