Would be great for him to get the remaining Adirondack starts. Games with little pressure where he can see what the jump to the AHL is like. He can then put the upcoming summer to better use knowing what he needs to work on and get accustomed to.

Would have loved to see him in Adirondack if they were heading to the playoffs.
But since they're not, would rather see him hanging and practicing with the team in Calgary and soaking up the playoff experience.
Edit: as a 3rd goalie, not suggesting he replace Ortio

I think they would prefer to sign him to a Kenney Morrison type contract, that starts next year and allows him to play AHL now. He's a goalie, so he's going to need development time, so that extra contract year will be huge.
If the Flames need a 3rd goalie, I really don't see how Gillies will be that much more of an upgrade over Thiessen. If it comes down to the 3rd goalie, FLames are screwed regardless.

Not talking about him playing, just being around the team. And it wouldn't eat up a year of contract
Yes if the Flames have to play a 3rd goalie, their season will be over anyway.

With the O'Connor rumors, wouldn't it be something to sign both. I definitely like Gillies more, however. Would just find it funny that the Flames end up with both goalies from the finals.

Should be a no brainer for Gillies. Just won the championship and your NHL team just made the playoffs with a rookie goalie backup. Even if he never even dresses as backup, what a great experience to start your pro career with!

If it's me, you sign him for this year. Hope for lightning in a bottle. Ortio looked weak in his return from injury, Ramo is out and Thiessen isn't an NHL option.. I hope we hear today. He may not be able to elevate his game to NHL quality this season, but we need insurance one way or another..

Gotta think that even hanging out with the guys and being in practice/meetings/workouts would be better than being down on the farm team right now. Get some advice from Sigalet, Hiller, Ramo and Ortio, plus getting a feel for NHL shots. Plus if Ortio goes down we can dress him as a backup. Too many positives to be had to pass up an opportunity for NHL development time.

If the Flames do sign him for this NHL season, Ortio will have to be sent back to Adirondack until after Adirondack's last game on the April 19 (assuming the likely scenario that Adirondack misses the playoffs). This is because Ortio is on emergency recall and adding Gillies to the NHL roster will mean the Flames have 2 healthy goaltenders and emergency conditions do not exist anymore.
No way do the Flames have a goalie with 0 pro games backup games 1,2 & 3 of the playoffs.
If they do announce the signing in the next couple of days it means he is going to Adirondack.

I thought emergency recalls only affected the regular season?
In any case, couldn't the Flames just scratch Gillies until the AHL season is over, kind of like what they did for the Jets game?

Do Photon and the moderators get any pay? With all those advertisers taking up their own sub forums I hope Bingo is trickling down some of that down.

Emergency recalls and the 4 recall rule are there to prevent teams from raiding their minor league affiliates. They are in effect until the affiliates' seasons are over.
To do what they did in the Jets game there needs to be evidence of an injury or illness. Unless Gillies has a nagging injury they can't do this.

I invited him to my birthday but he gave me some garbage excuse about not being a 'Flames Prospect' or some such nonsense.

Okay, what about loaning Gillies to Adirondack on a conditioning stint?

probably looked at by the league as circumventing the emergency recall rule
Quote:
13.8 Conditioning Loan. Unless a Player consents, he shall not be Loaned on a Conditioning
Loan to a minor league club. Such Conditioning Loan shall not extend for more than fourteen
(14) consecutive days. The Commissioner may take whatever steps he deems necessary to
investigate the circumstances under which a Player is Loaned on a Conditioning Loan. If the
Commissioner has reason to believe or determines that the Club has used the Conditioning Loan
to evade Waivers, or otherwise Circumvent any provision of this Agreement, he may take such
disciplinary action against the Club, as he deems appropriate. The Player shall continue, during
the period of such Conditioning Loan, to receive the same Paragraph 1 NHL Salary, and be
entitled to the same benefits, that he would have received had he continued to play with the Club.
|
edit: after thinking about it more, section 13.12j says no one can be loaned to a league affiliate after the trade deadline unless they were recalled under the 4 player recall rule, emergency recall or they were injured at the trade deadline, so that definitely rules out a conditioning loan

It still makes sense to sign Gillies to an NHL deal this year. That way Ortio can get a game or two in and get his timing back before being recalled again after the season is over.
The other option is calling Thiessen back up and sending Ortio down and signing Gillies to an ATO for this season in Adirondack... Likely the best long term solution in terms of everyone's development, but sadly, it means no looks for Gillies at the NHL level until next year's training camp.

I think it should be obvious that the Flames have little to no confidence in Thiessen, otherwise Ortio wouldn't have been rushed back and would have played games in Adirondack.
