A few years ago I had a girlfriend who made fun of me everytime I said "we" because I'd get comments like: "I didn't realise you played for the team!".
She's long gone now and after thinking about it, I make the decision to invest emotionally so I think we is appropriate, when they win and are all happy, I am also happy. When they lose and everything is going wrong, I'm kind of sad right there with them. They aren't completely separate from me.
Will agree that maybe it's childish, but I'm not hurting anyone so if someone has a problem, it will remain theirs alone.

You pay money right? Well, if people stop paying money, the owners can't afford good players, and we become the Ottawa Senators. That's how I like to think the fans contribute to wins and losses.
All an opinion obviously, and I get the argument against it.

I think part of it is that professional sports teams use the name of the city in their title. They are the Calgary Flames, not the Flames. There seems to be a bit more collectiveness in the prior.
I also find using 'they' even more uncomfortable than using 'we'

I actually went to Russia and convinced Gio to come back, so maybe I can say we.
Plus I'm actually Lance Bouma.
The foregoing might not be accurate.

Sure, I'm with you. I just don't think buying a product is enough to consider myself a part of the team. Similarly, if I buy an iPhone, I do not refer to Apple as "we", even though Apple relies on my consumer support to continue making products. "We" are not launching the Apple Watch.
And yeah, I don't have a particularly strong opinion or anything, this is just why I don't do what I don't do. No offense to anyone who wants to use "we" when describing any sports team they cheer for.

Logically and intellectually, I do not think fans should use we.
In reality I do it all the time

There are people that love hearing Jack Edwards? He might be the worst play by play dude in the league.

Much like in Football with the fans being the "13th Man" (unless you're Saskatchewan then they're the 14th man hehe), the Fans are as much a part of their team as the players. A rowdy barn has a very real effect upon the opposition (see: every player and team interview from '04 about playing in the Dome).
So yes, We beat the Grease 20-0. But the inverse is also true. We got our asses handed to us by The Blues, wow...

Dude, once you take it as read that he's going to be a homer, his play calling is OUTSTANDING. Granted, there are a few hiccups, but the vast bulk of the viewing experience is just great. He sells every call hard while appropriately describing everything with excellent measured pacing... I should try to find a good set of highlights from a game the Bruins lost to show what I'm talking about.

For me:
"We played great" = no.
"We wuz robbed in '04" = yes.
"We need to pass more" = no.
"We have a great team" = yes.
"We have great goaltending" = probably OK.
"We made the POs" = I will be happy so I don't even care.
"Here we go" (after the start of a 3rd period comeback) = yup.

Funny, I thought this thread was going to be a dialogue about it coming down to either "us" or "them" for the final playoff spot ("we" being the Flames, aka the good guys, and "they" being the Kings, aka the big bad former champs).

When he's actually calling the play he's okay. It's his excessive screaming when something remotely exciting happens. Rask makes a standard save and he flips out. Add his blatant, over the top homerism on top of that, and I can't stand him.

When I'm speaking in person, I'll often say "we", but it usually depends on context. I'll say "we play Colorado next", or "we really need a goal", but I'm more likely to use "they" when talking about something directly in the game, like "they're really flying tonight" or "they've really been strong on the puck".
When posting online, I very rarely use "we". In fact, I've edited posts to change "we" to "they" many times.
The only time it ever bugs me is if someone is a fan of a team other than the Flames who'll post a "we" about their team on CalgaryPuck. It also makes it confusing when someone posts something like "we really need a win in Edmonton tonight" when talking about the Jets.
