And to be fair I don't think I have ever seen someone injure their arm that way. Kind of a freak accident when that player lazily stuck his stick in there.

Paying a 36+ year old over 6.5 million doesn't sit well with me.

Good thing it's not your money.

Anything less than 7 a year would be a steal for the Flames.

I've said this before. Even if they over pay, it is fully justified. Nobody would argue if he was paid 8mm/year the last 2 seasons, he's been that damn good. So a big part of his next contract will absolutely be goodwill for past performance.

I bet it will be $8MM x 5 yrs. I would even gamble on 6 yrs. Look at how strong Chara, Lidstrom, Borque, and Neidermayer were/are into their late 30's.

And at the current market rate for his calibre of player, it's a fair deal for both sides.

He'll turn 32 just before the start of next season, and he's still under contract for next season. His next contract will cover his 33+ years. For that reason alone, I can't see it being longer than 5 years, maybe even 4.

This injury won't likely make any change to what the Flames offer him, or what he's willing to accept.

Personal opinion, but I don't always think that agents and players agree. The agent has money as the primary focus, which is usually in the players best interest as well. However I honestly believe there are players out there that don't care one way or another what figure they squeeze out of the team as long as they play for the team they want to. No basis for thinking that, just a personal opinion.

So yeah, I could see his agent pitching to him 'Team-x is offering 8m over 6 years, let's put pen to paper Gio!' and Gio being more interested in the 6x6 Brad has on the table.

Every team thinks this about their beloved pending UFA. And he actually might leave a bit of money on the table. But not TWELVE MILLION FRIGGIN DOLLARS.

Why not? 6x6 still has him pulling $36M

At some point, you just have 'enough' money and more and more just stops mattering. When it's a team you Captain, believe in, made a life with and are passionate about there has to be a point where you're just making as much as you want to. There is always a team willing to overpay for someone, you have to think it's turned down all the time.

Not saying that Gio DOES leave $12M on the table (or that I think $6x6 is what he is offered, I'd bet more $7x6), but I'm saying I wouldn't be too shocked if players are constantly leaving insane cash on the table.
