So sad, watching the family speak was heart breaking.
I just don't get how in a situation like this how a person can point a gun at an innocent civilian or police officer and pull the trigger.
Just senseless violence and now this family loses a Father, Husband, Son and friend.

Wow, that is so saddening to hear. I was really hoping he'd pull through.

I first heard about this on the radio this morning. Rhett Warrener interrupted the morning show on the FAN by asking "Can we be serious here for a moment?", and broke the news. It's a good thing I had just parked my car at work, because it was really saddening to hear.

Rest in Peace, Constable Wynn. Thank you for your service.

Just got this email from 660...

Quote:
Alberta justice minister orders review into Crown's actions in Mountie shootings

Jonathan Denis has ordered a review into how the Crown handled a career criminal who ended up gunning down two Mounties in St. Albert on the weekend.

Shawn Rehn had a lengthy criminal record and was facing dozens of charges when he shot two officers at a casino in St. Albert on Saturday.

Const. David Wynn died of his injuries in hospital this morning, while auxiliary Const. Derrick Bond faces a long recovery at home.

scathing article in the National Post on the fact the murderer (who doesn't deserved to be named) of Cnst Wynn (who does deserve to be named) was arrested and released on bail when there were legitimate grounds to have locked this guy up until his hearing.

I'd like to see Quan in front of news cameras explaining exactly why he failed to properly execute his duties and then explaining to the family why his actions (or lack thereof) caused their father and husband to be murdered. The I'd like to see him in front of an EPS disciplinary committee and heaved off the force.

If he drags his ass on a case like this that would run itself in competent hands, god knows how he handles his day to day duties.

You can't hang one single person out to dry on this $hat storm. If your gonna throw the hearing officer under the bus, then you need to reprimand his supervisor, the arresting officer that prepared the "show cause", then member that approved the report. The system failed to keep him in jail not one person.

Yup. Let's hang an officer out to dry while they're all morning so you can feel justice. Great idea

An officer who was presumably doing his best in a role he was possibly not trained for or experienced in.

But, of course, this is why Blatchford went with the name and shame approach. It is so easy to lead people like Whiteout by the nose. What I took out of that story is the fact that the system needs changing in this regard, at least for people with histories.

I read an article a few days ago that said Alberta was in desperate need of more judges. I wonder who f that played into this as well.

Tragic.

Unfortunately there's probably real dangerous people released on bail all the time. Or just flat out released from prison. You can't keep everyone locked up forever, and there's always more nuts out there wanting to kill cops. If they thought Rehn was gonna kill a cop, he wouldn't have been walking around. Sad situation all around.

What happens in this Province all the time is is a justice of the Peace or Provincial Court judge will deny bail, then the defence lawyer will bring the case to Queen's Bench for bail review and about 75% of the time the Queen's Bench Justice will let the accused out.

When you go to a bail review as a Crown you know that no matter what you say most of the time, the QB justice will just let out the accused anyway.

Even if this individual was denied bail by the Justice of the Peace, I can tell you that there is a good chance the QB justice would have let him out on bail review in any event.

Want to get bail? Pitch some religious release plan and wait for the QB justice who lets everyone out if they say they love Jesus.

Want to get bail? Wait for the QB Justice who never convicts and lets every single person out on bail because he can never make up his mind.

Want to get bail? Wait for just about any female QB justice, who only care about rehabilitation and not protection of the public and will release someone if their mother says "she doesn't allow drinking in the house"

The problem with the justice system is not the Criminal Code, it is who the particular Judge happens to be that day.

Some court rooms are jam packed with people applying for bail. In other court rooms not a single person applies for bail. Why is that? Defence counsel know what each particular judge is going to do based on past experience.

And since the judiciary is independent, they answer to no one, ever.

Why not? While I'm not a fan of something like the three strike rule in the states because its not flexible.

A guy like this killer who had been charged with crimes hundreds of times and convicted more then 50 times should never be allowed to be free again.

I'm a firm supporter in the idea that if you're convicted of a second violence based or sexual crime you are removed from society forever, you've lost your chance. you can live your life in a 6x12 cell and rot for the rest of your life.

Thanks for throwing a little sexism into that uninformed rant as well.
