Best (likely) candidates for the 2nd pairing are Oduya and Michalek.

Franson is a realistic acquisition.

Stoll would be nice to get some center depth.

Could be that this season they Staaled for McDavid.

Anyways our success in the UFA market could depend on whether we squeeze into the playoffs or not.

Slightly off topic here, but if so many would like to see Boychuck signed this offseason, was not trading for him in the summer a missed opportunity for the Flames? Cost the Islanders two second round picks which seems pretty reasonable. Having Boychuck around for the season would also probably increase his chances of re-signing here.

I'd argue that was a missed opportunity for many teams, not just the Flames ...

... but yeah, let's just say I would have prefered giving up two 2nds for Johnny Boychuk instead of paying Deryk freaking Engelland 8.7m over three years. Aaaaaah, that contract still pisses me off so much.

no not really. You might have a case if the Flames were widely considered to be a playoff team in the offseason.

But when the Boychuk trade was made the Flames could have easily been one of the front runners for McDavid and any team in that position trading 2 second rounders for a pending UFA would be a bad move.

I would LOVE to get Boychuk on the team. That would be one of those guys where he signs, I go out and immediately buy a jersey. He was a fan favourite with the Hitmen and he's a great defenceman. Would allow us to break up Gio and Brodie and put one with him, one with Russell and have 2 pairs where one D is offence minded, the other is defence minded.

My biggest fear is as he's both from Edmonton and has previously Ference's defence partner, the the Oilers back up a money truck to his place and pay him an excessive amount to play there and make him forever unclean.

Brodie - Franson
Russell - Wideman

Yes, please.

Boychuk isn't signing in Edmonton. I'll be shocked if he even makes it to free agency. He's been a great fit with this Islanders and I bet he re-signs there.

I don't think people realize how important defensive partners are - if you have a pairing that works as well as Giordano and Brodie, you don't break it up. Period.

They are both way better together than apart.

Find ways to make the other two pairings better, but don't touch Gio/Bordie.

Would love it if we backed up the brinks truck for Staal. But we must be prepared to top that price by a lot to extend Gio after that...

I like Stoll fine as a player (not signing with Calgary as a rookie aside) but centre depth? Monahan, Bennett, Backlund, Shore, Stajan, Jooris, Granlund, Arnold, Colborne.

We shouldn't even be looking at centers. We are overloaded with capable and quality centers for years to come.

A big RW scorer and a top 4 D. That is the extent of this team's needs right now and going into the offseason.

I am a big fan of Staal. I haven't watched the Rangers much the last year or so, but at 28 I imagine he is still playing great.

Hate the Engelland deal all you want, but trading two 2nds for an upcoming UFA in Boychuk would of been worse.
