Why risk losing a useful component on waivers when you can send Granlund down without risk?

And why would you expect it to by Byron? Guys who are truly in the dog house have been sent to the press box first, and Byron hasn't had that treatment yet.

Byron isn't in the doghouse. He's performing about as well as you can expect him to. Unfortunately for him he's about as low on the NHL totem pole as you can get. He may get claimed but it wouldn't be much of a loss.

I think Granlund brings as much to the table now and has more upside going forward.

If Byron got claimed it means you probably could have traded him for something. So that's a loss.

Don't look now but Byron is 3rd on the Flames in hits with 68. A huge part of the PK with the second most PK minutes (among forwards) behind Bouma who leads the Flames. 6th in the entire NHL for takeaways.

The guy is a third liner and makes 600K. I'd say he is performing above what should be expected from such a player. Perfect 3rd line energy PK guy as far as I'm concerned. Any scoring is a bonus.

At this point they might as well send down McGrattan because it's apparent that Hartley doesn't trust him in the line-up (rightfully). With Backlund back they can have one or more of Byron, Jooris, Granlund, Jones, Bollig, Bouma and Stajan sit depending on performance.
