Arcobello is one of their better young players. Always maintained a respectable +/- compared to the star kids, and could dish the puck pretty well. They just gave away a decent young player for an older guy that won't do anything good except bump Draisaitl further down the lineup.

doubt they'll send him down. Had they just claimed Roy off waivers, they'd be able to ice RNH-Roy-Arcobello-Gordon for the rest of the year and send Draisaitl back to the Dub. Now they still only have 4 centers including Draisaitl.
a pure head scratcher, this one. But it's the Oilers, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Good work Edmonton. Just when we thought they couldn't be any more stupid. They are going full ######, Mcdavid won't even play for them. What's the plan, suck so hard they are moved to another league?

Lol that would be funny. In all seriousness, if edmonton does end up trading one of the core they will probably be receiving a couple of contracts back. Can't see a team trading for hall or Eberle with their contract $'s and not sending a couple of contracts back to make money a little more equal. I highly doubt you would see a one for one player swap with the kind of $'s that Hall is carrying.

If the Oilers start ditching guys just because they’re crap, they won’t have enough guys left to make a starting lineup.
(And no management at all.)

Unbelievable.
They needed Roy and Arcobello! They have no centres. They need centres. This is a lateral move at best but more likely a downgrade.
So they traded a 26 year old RFA making $600K for a 31 year old UFA making $1M.
I just...words fail me. Where do they find these people?
In other news, Arcobello now believes that there exists a loving and benevolent God.

I know crapping on the Oilers for everything is all the rage, but how is this a head scratcher?
Waived players are traded for all the time. Arcobello is not an NHL player, so why let him eat a contract, and the Oilers upgrade their centre position with an actual NHL'er (albeit not a good one anymore) by spending 400k more.
It's an absolutely fine move.

The only limitation on trading a player claimed on waivers is that if you try to trade him later in the season, he has to be made available for free to any team who also put in a claim when he was originally waived.
Since he cleared waivers, no one else had put in a claim on him, so he would have been tradeable without limitations.

Arcobello is a 4th liner, but I thought he was one of the less No Good players on that team. He played his role as well as he could; something you cannot say about most of that roster. I thought he provided a bit of spark for them on their poor excuse for an energy line.
Roy? What does he provide that they're missing? Naddafrickinthing. Oilers gonna Oil.

I don't debate trading for a waived player, I debate doing it by trading another center. And to be fair, if Arcobello is not an NHL player, then Roy isn't either any more.

I would gladly have Roy over Mark Arcobello. Especially at that salary difference. Come on, Arcobello was awful.

Where does Arcobello end up? Predators bottom 6? Or does he get sent down to the minors now?

Exactly! Trade from any other position.
This is Teddy Purcell for Sam Gagner and oops we dont have any centres all over again.
At the end of the day they have made their team worse. Which is a pretty impressive feat if you really consider it.

That’s true, but while he was on waivers the Oilers couldn’t know that. By the time they knew nobody else claimed him, he had already cleared.

There should be a new rule: if you end up with 5 1st Overall draft picks in any decade your franchise gets relegated to the AHL.

Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
Dating back to Christmas one year ago, Brian McGrattan (3) and Kevin Westgarth (4) have both scored more goals than Derek Roy (2).
