Giordano absolutely 100% should win it regardless of where the Flames finish. For awards like the Hart I think you have to take the team's placing into consideration but the Norris is more of a pure individual award.
That said, some eastern defenseman like Subban will probably win it.

If he keeps it up even remotely, then yes. Remember we are just about half way, there is still a lot of hockey left. He could keep racking up the points or he could cool off and someone else could steal the spot light.
My vote is for Gio for sure though. Such a competitor.

Their stellar D core is still intact and Weber is well... Weber.
Nashville is not a surprise to me and I think Weber has a bit better supporting cast than Gio does (experience wise). This is why I think Gio has a leg up on Weber. Not much but slight.

except that they waived Roy this morning.

I'd like to give a bit more time before I judge but as of now, definitely.

If he wins the defense scoring race I think he will have a good chance.

I think if voting was today it would be between him and Doughty. Brodie would probably be in the top 5 or close

Admittedly I don't watch all games but I would say Gio has been as consistently good as any defenseman as any in the league this year.

Forget his points for a second. Even the clutch OT winning goal.
He's been just so reliable and solid for us this season. Always coming through with a timely hit, deflection, block, good defensive position, and from the sounds of it, he's huge behind the scenes too for this young team as a leader and a captain.
Even if he doesn't for some reason win the Norris, I'd say he's put together the kind of play where we gotta start talking about someday retiring that jersey of his.
Now remember those points.
Norris and Hart!

Anyone want to join in on letting ESPN know they've got the wrong guy atop their Norris watch:

Just going by past reputation, not what's actually going on this season. Typical ESPN. Also they don't watch Canadian teams, so what do you expect?

Weber is a +16 playing on a top-shelf team with the Vezina front-runner behind him. Gio is a +20 playing on a team of 21-year olds. A projected +30 for Weber is a projected +36 for Gio either way.

I agree with you, but history is littered with defensemen who were better than the Norris winner but didn't win the award because they didn't make the playoffs.
One could rightly argue a vezina winner and presidents trophy need a stud defenseman to win those...

Nah, if he keeps this pace and we miss the play offs, he'll have a fair sniff(i.e. be reasonably high in the voting), but I doubt he wins it.
I think whether said players team makes the play offs is irrelevant. Each players achievements come the end of the regular season should be taken and looked at relatively. Is Gio putting up 70 points and a +35 for an average team that doesn't make the play offs more impressive than Weber putting up 65 points and a +30 for the top team that does? Even with my Flames bias I'd argue that it is.

Without a doubt. But having a goaltender who's basically a 6'5 athletic beast clean up your mistakes has to be a big cushion to play with.
Just for fun, and I know it has nothing to do with this year's Norris, consider Shea Weber was a -2 in 79 games last year with Pekka Rinne missing 58 games, and the 2013-2014 Preds still had 11 more points than the 2013-2014 Flames. Gio was a +12 in 64 games on a team that was often playing Reto Berra and even Joey McDonald. Hutton's goaltending numbers were almost identical to Karri Ramo for us.

Or even because they play for the wrong team. I'm still mad about Al MacInnis losing to Bourque that year Al had over 100 points. Ever since then, I don't really expect a Flame to ever win this trophy.
The Iginla "snub" was a similar feeling, but at least I can accept the argument that a Hart winner should lead his team to the playoffs.
