The move to black in uniforms came about in the 90s when people (often not hockey fans) started wearing hockey jerseys as a fashion thing, and they thought black looked cooler. Rather than subject the jersey to the vagaries of fashion, I'd relegate black (or whatever is currently trendy) to the 3rd jersey, and go back to the traditional white, red, and yellow for the home and away jerseys.

When did white at home start? Wasn't it originally dark at home back in B&W TV days?

It will be more difficult for the Edmonton Oilers' ice girls to spot all those white Oiler jerseys. The dark blue contrasts so much better from the ice.

It was white at home back in the days of the 6 team league.

The Video they made of the 1986 run was called the "Cea of Red".
I know Ottawa tried using "sea of red" the year they went to the final, '07 I think. But it works better here.

"Will we ever see white jerseys again on home ice?"
You might white jerseys on the ice on the 27th and 31st of December. They'll just be Oiler jerseys without anyone wearing them.

A quick Google search shows that 'whites at home' started in the 1969-70 season. Before, darks at home were used. The Rangers didn't even have a white jersey until 1951.

Carolina wore their whites at home today against Nashville, I have no clue why. Watched the highlights and it just looks wrong.

Check again, the 69-70 season was the last time that whites were worn on the road regularly for 33 years. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup at home wearing their darks. When you look at youtube, Bobby Orr is flying in the air after he scored the OT winner. The 70-71 season was when whites become the home jersey and darks became the away jersey. The Habs won the cup in Chicago Stadium wearing their reds and the Bhawks were in white.

I seem to recall this happening a couple of times in recent year. I know one of the times it was because the had equipment issues or something like that.

I know it's not popular but I don't prefer the old home jerseys from 89 to the more recent ones. I like the darker red, and black trim. The old red looks too washed out for me and the pale yellow adds to that.

You mean from 1980-94. And as said before many times, the red had also been the same shade. The black makes it look darker.

The white home jerseys was always a backwards thing by the NHL. Home is where you should be able to show off your team colors.

I must be wrong about the shade though I was sure I've seen them side by side and the old ones looked more orangey.

I've posted this before. 4 authentic jerseys side by side:
The bottom one is the current normal home jersey; on top of that is the retro jersey they wore in 09-10; on top of that is the pre-Edge home jersey with the horse heads on the shoulders; on top of that is the new third.

Thanks! Do you have a comparison between the 80s and now?
