All in all.. ####ty for J J, crummy parents, but it is very hard for me to have any empathy or even one ounce of give a #### after reading
"Jack Johnson left his Ferrari parked in the garage of his Dublin apartment and drove his BMW to a federal courthouse Downtown to file for bankruptcy."
Whatever, he will make it back, and still live VERY WELL OFF
The Ferrari was a splurge on a big contract. Had his parents not been ripping him off, it would have been no big deal. The BMW is the first SUV he got when he turned pro and has kept. He is not a frivolous spender. He was ripped off by his parents.
Have you ever gotten a big raise at work and splurged on something you always wanted? His raise was just larger than most of ours.
Exactly right. It is the same reason why we should not be stunned when we learn of pro athletes who struggle with substance abuse, mental illness and other issues the impact people of all income levels.
The one thing is these guys are better equipped to confront and deal with these issues - money grants you access to a wider net of support. But the person has to want to fix it.
Moreso with money though. What happens when you give an 18 year old $1,000? Now what happens if you give that same amount to a 35 year old who has learned how to budget?
It would be such a bummer to have to turn your back on your parents forever because they stole all your money. I would buy my parents anything they ever needed if I had the cash and I'm sure Johnson would have too. It is a real tragedy that his family had to break up over something so stupid.
They said in the article that he is famous for his between whistle dances. I think he just does it randomly all game long. He probably won't be dancing as much now that he is destitute.
Jeez signing power of attorney over to your parents? Is it a common thing for professional athletes to sign power of attorney over in the first place?
I mean to extent I get it, you're a young guy, with a singular focus in your life, so passing off the money management to some one else might be appealing. "Yeah Jack, don't worry about paying rent/bills/car payments or getting groceries. You focus on hockey, we'll take care of the rest."
But to have your parents burn through it all? That's much worse than some guys who blow it all on fancy cars and nights at the club.

Yeah, all of the disaster without any of the fun.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Wow, that is sick. I wonder if his parents are guilty of anything. Giving someone power of attorney is a huge mistake.
Ya, I agree with this.
I wonder if the NHL has life lesson kind of training for their players so this doesn't continue to be a big problem. I wonder how they convinced him to not have an agent or business manager? Seems strange.

According to Duhatschek this morning, Jack Johnson did have a highly respected agent at one point (Pat Brisson), but he dumped him order to keep more of his money.

The NHLPA should have mandatory courses for all players once they sign their first contracts. This shouldn't be happening in this day and age. Poor guy. Tough lesson to learn.

I can see how its pretty easy to convince someone not to have an agent or business manager. A lot of people don't think there is a lot of value in having them.
Why pay an agent a percentage of your million dollar contract when you can have a family member you trust do it for free or less than what the agent is charging? Until a person gets burned and sees the value of having a professional, a lot of people may see an agent/business manager as an unnecessary expense.
I know Ovechkin's mom is his agent. Brodeur didn't have an agent for most of his time with New Jersey.
I can see how Johnson fell into this predicament. He probably saw a lot of the sacrifices his parents made for him to play hockey and assumed they would always have his best interests at heart. The parents got greedy and probably felt entitled to his money.
As an aside in 2009, his father was reported as going behind Johnson's back while he was in negotiations with the Kings and contacted KHL teams to get offers to help drive up the $ figure.

I remember that, the guy is a complete lunatic.
You know what, your kid was giving you money, if they'd been reasonable about it they could have had a little less money over a much, much longer period of time, but they decided to 'smash and grab.'
I hope they go bankrupt too and never see another dime from Jack.
