I wonder if they'll be able to drill if the harpoons aren't fired. It's got a drill to drill to various depths and feed 3 of the 8 experiments.

Hey guys, this is a really awesome Kickstarter I backed yesterday. They need just ~$500 to get their final stretch goal which is a poster celebrating The Planetary Society. Great stuff, you should check it out. Just 2 hours left on the clock.

My brain hurts so much from just trying to comprehend this.
10 years in space. 6 billion KMs traveled, and it's just now landed on a comet. Pretty incredible.

This is what I'm concerned about. I don't think they can, it would probably kick them off the comet. Not a whole lot of gravity up there.

- Philae landed safely and in the right place.
- Radio link and power working.
- Collecting data from the spacecraft and science instruments.
- The anchoring harpoons did not fire.
- Landed but not secured.
- Do not fully understand what has happened yet. Perhaps just landed in a soft spot?
- The lander MAY have bounced. It looks like it landed, "lifted off" again, and then landed once more. "We may have landed TWICE!"
- Should know much more tomorrow.
- Philae will be out of contact for several hours until Rosetta can perform another planned maneuver.

It looks like they received the last communication from the lander. Apparently it landed next to a cliff which is preventing the solar panels from working correctly.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/ro...nder-1.2836387
They aren't sure if they will ever be able to receive another signal, but they are saying for sure that it won't be any time soon even if they do.
Still, a pretty amazing accomplishment to even land it. Hopefully the data it collected is useful.

Would be a great way to find out we aren't alone for an alien to land on the comet and kick the probe over so it gets power again.

While it's obviously amazing what they achieved. It's also really depressing that it might never communicate again
