It would probably do tremendous numbers I know I would watch.

2:40-4:30 Wow – amazing how far we have come. I bet even Grapes cringes a bit when he sees that now. Ron as sharp as ever “This one could go either way”.

Don Cherry's Grapes of wrath: Much ado about nothing on Hockey Night In Canada

Quote:
But his new boss, who was once his old boss, says it's pretty much business as usual.

``Don has a theory about television and that's always leaving people wanting more," says Scott Moore, president of Rogers NHL broadcasts.

``The way he's done that over the years is by saying he doesn't have enough time,

``He may have done it a little more than usual on Saturday, but that's because he had a lot he wanted to get on. It was nothing more than that."

Cherry said as much in an interview on Rogers-owned Sportsnet The FAN 590.

Cherry said he was a little upset about not having enough time for a Remembrance Day bit, but dismissed it as anything serious.

Hockey Night in Canada will always remain since it's an NHL property. But Once the four year deal with CBC is done, I could see Rogers not renewing it and have it be a full on Rogers Sportsnet brand. They will be working over the next few years to shift the identity of the brand over from CBC's legacy to their own.

I believe that CBC owns the HNiC brand, not the NHL. They are just licensing it to Rogers as part of the deal.

A full online segment is a no brainer...actually shocked that no one at Rogers thought of it. It's the perfect sort of thing to grab clicks...on every platform.

However, considering the problems I've had trying to watch this Saturday's clip on the sportsnet website I'm confident they would screw it up. My laptop is now on the sluggish side, but seems to have considerably more trouble with rogers content than youtube, vimeo, etc.

True. The NHL basically threw CBC a bone letting HNIC remain there. I agree they are phasing it out. Cherry will retire. MacLean will retire or go to SN as a part timer. HNIC will go onto SN.

He is entertaining and I'd be in the group of wanting to see more of him, not less.

I was tired of him in the 90s. Now he's a parody of that.

And his "not enough time" bit has been part of his schtick for as long as I can remember. He'd snap at Maclean for giving him the knee bump.

With the $$$ both Cherry and Maclean make it won't be long before both are retired. We have it now for the flames but how long before all canadian teams get cheap AHL voices for radio and then TV.

Most announcers start in lower leagues before making it to the NHL..

Most lower league announcers never make the NHL...but with Rodgers at the helm a lot more now have a chance. forcing Maher out 2 years early for a hack like Wills was brutal.

There was a time I wanted to sync my TV to radio but I can't even listen to a game on the radio now.

I think the pair we have on the Fan 960 is really good.

It's the first time I can honestly say I like listening both on TV and radio.

Wills gets a year to find his feet because he's adjusting to the bright lights of the NHL, but thus far he hasn't been good. His calls lack any sort of emotion, and as a radio personality he's painful. He doesn't set the stage for a game well, and his pre game stuff sounds like he's reading his copy (which he is) instead of telling a story.

On the flip side, Peter Maher was with this team for 30+ years. He loves this team with all his heart, and when you combine that with his natural talent, you get a hall of famer.

Wills' audio from Hamilton is better than his work here. So he may get better. If he maintains this level, that's a problem.

Wills has huge shoes to fill. I agree he's pretty vanilla (which I suppose is better than some of those over-the-top guys from the Eastern US teams. Maher had just the right balance of excitement, knowledge of the team, a smidge of Yeah Baby homerism and "regular guy-sim". I always found Maher's pre-game spiel corny (he always had some hook or pun he was trying like hell to use) but somehow it came across ok.

They didn't force him out, he retired. He said his career took a huge toll on his family life so he wanted to focuse the remainder of his life on them.

I think the team wanted him to retire....

IMO Wills is just fine as a PBP guy. The issue is that he is replacing a legend in Maher. To call him a hack is an outright insult IMO.

Many had thought the CBC folding was supposed to happen two decades ago.
