They'll probably raise the price of jerseys because there's more material involved with adding the advertisements.

Ideally if that's all the NHL allowed, I'd be ok with it.

They will start with those small CFL-style ads - which are still atrocious and completely unnecessary for a major league - then grow and grow and grow.
I won't pretend that I will be in the majority on it, but I will never buy a Flames jersey with an overt ad on it. Small, large, covering the entire thing. It won't happen. If the team wants to cheapen its brand to make an extra couple dollars from Scotiabank, that is its choice. It will come at the cost of my dollars. Hopefully enough people follow suit to cause the team/league to give pause.

I already own a couple of advertisement clad Euro jerseys, so it won't deter me.

Yup. Once the door is opened, it's easier to make the next change and it never goes back to what it was.

I could see the Canadiens having a clean jersey but I'm sure the Leafs and MLSE would be the first in line to whore their jerseys out for a few extra bucks.

hopefully they keep it at the CFL level, and not going the soccer jersey route. Where the jersey seems branded more to the key sponsor than any kind of team branding, which may be obvious since soccer typically aren't big on team logos, but rather shields which aren't meant to be big emblems on the front of a jersey.
if i don't like a particular brand, it would definitely deter me to buy a jersey (ie. if i hated toyota , but it was visually present on the flames jersey).

On second thought, since I know it won't be our owners who do it, I want to just see one team not take the extra money to keep their jerseys intact. The Habs, the Leafs, the Rangers ... any of them. Just please at least one team stand up and say "No, we make enough money to not do this to our logo".

Honestly, half the reason I can't get into soccer is the fact that I find nothing compelling about a match-up between the BMOs and the Bells. Or the Samsungs vs. the Emirates Airlines.

Meh, I'm just gonna stock up on a few jerseys now. A few sizes of each whenever they're on sale for my future kid as they grow up

This is very disappointing. I always felt it was inevitable, but I hoped the NHL would have held out longer.

When they say "digital replacement technology" for board ads, my first thought was that they'd be replacing the board ads with the digitally superimposed ads for TV like Sportsnet already does on the glass. I'm not opposed to this idea as long as Rogers syncs the damn video and audio together!

Overeaction by a few here.
First, we don't know what type of ads are gonna be on the jersey. It could be like Soccer jerseys, or it could be like the CFL, where it's a small patch. And based on tradition, I think it's likely to be the latter.
Second, if it's like the CFL logos on jerseys, the retail versions don't actually have the ads on them, so for those that like to collect jerseys, you still would be able to without fear of an ad ruining it for you. I'm pretty sure the NHL understands which method will allow the most jersey sales.

it's fine, I would like the jersey if the ad was something I like.
Change is always good

Strange I've never thought of it this way. They still have the team crest on the jersey.

Same ownership that raises ticket prices with the lowest payroll in the league

You hit the nail on the head with your last sentence.
They will put advertising on jersey(s). It will then be up to the NHL to decide if their revenue went up or down.
While I am not a fan of the Eruo style jersy ads, I don't see see anything wrong with advertising on a jersey if it is done right.
I don't really see this as a cheapening of a brand.

Do you guys notice advertising on tennis players or golfers?
Flames sponsors might be Scotiabank and Tim hortons or something. Red logos anyways.
I find the blue Alberta flag much worse.

Regarding digital ads on the boards, don't some rinks already use those? I'm pretty sure I've seen them when watching games on tv before (or maybe the ads were a scrolling loop type of thing.)
