Assuming the Flames don't fall off the map he will be re-upped after the season is done. Hopefully it's not one of those things CP will be worried about for the next few months, because if the Flames continue to play well, it will be an easy contract to negotiate.

My guess is that Hartley and reliving have had some type of preliminary conversations and that nothing has leaked out yet.

I would think that this really is not a distraction in the dressing room regardless of what happens. They players know that if the team under performs, that they will still be here, and the coach will be gone.

Say what you want, but that is the simple reality of life in the NHL.......

That's terrifying... Tippet hockey is terrible to watch, almost as bad as Brent Sutter hockey.

Any talk of Tippett would likely be overruled by Burke, who has stated before that he despises boring hockey.

Chances of getting Babcock are zero.

If we wait until the end of the year let's not forget that Hartley is a free agent. You can be guaranteed that other teams would love to have him and the work ethic he manages to instill in getting a team to over-perform. We can wait and take a gamble he does not go elsewhere... or give him an extension soon. I'm for giving him an extension and not waiting. What more do we need to see??

Systems are less important than work ethic in my opinion. If Hartley can instill the work ethic, the systems can come later if need be.

In the off season, at a STH meeting, Treliving said that he needed to see Hartley work personally and would wait to do so before discussing any extension. For fans, we've seen this type of effort most of last year (certainly with great consistency after the Canucks bruh-ha-ha). So it seems like he's been deserving of an extension for longer. 11 games (plus preseason) may just be too short for Treliving. If this keeps up through the allstar break, Treliving should have a good enough sample size. Also, it could be that Hartley wants extensions for his assistants too and the process is more involved and is taking longer to evaluate.

On a related note, you often hear about lame duck coaches not having the pull in the room to be effective (players tuning him out because he's on his way out). I think this is a testament to two groups of people: (1) Hartley and the coaching staff for keeping up the intensity, benching vets and motivating the team to bring effort every night and (2) Giordano and the leadership.

I don't doubt that if this effort continues, Hartley et al will get a 2-3 year re-up. But he doesn't seem to worried about it and the team continues to perform so it doesn't seem to be a factor... at all.

It's hard to see Hartley walking away from the flames. He's got a young talented team that listens to him, and a (seemingly) good relationship with the rest of management. I think he'd have a good sense of ownership of this team and where it's going. I can't see another team outbidding us for him. It seems like something would really have to come out of left field in order for him not to stay.

to be honest Babcock has been in Detroit for such a long time that I totally forgot that he coached the Ducks at some point

I don't think it's a question of if, but just how long at this point. You can tell he likes it here and loves the group

The Hartley isn't Trelivings guy doesn't make sense when the coach is getting the most out of the team. Treliving isn't going to get rid of Hartley just to put his own stamp on the team, that would be unwise. When we get 20 or 30 games in a row where the team clearly isn't playing well then a different coach is an idea worth entertaining.

Coachs have allot less chips than player when they go to the table, it's pretty rare to see a coach walk away from a team as a "free agent" and cash in big time somewhere else, for this reason I expect the Flames to wait for as long as they can.

Maybe Hartley is waiting for his dream job in Vegas, Seattle or Quebec City?

I don't think you will see Hartley getting a contract until just before Christmas, or just after the New Year. I think Treliving wants to be sure about Hartley before signing him to a deal. I am sure it will happen, however.

As for Babcock - I doubt he would sign here as it is rumored he would be looking at a deal like Roy in Colorado where he is a decision-maker, but it wouldn't be 'crazy' to think he would be interested in Calgary. He does have some history in Alberta after all, and these Flames have to be looked at as a young up and coming team now with the way they have performed since after the Olympic break last year. If I am a coach, the older teams that are just hanging on look like riskier destinations, and young teams that are seemingly breaking through become attractive I think.

I bet Hartley gets re-signed. He has firmly put his stamp on this team, and they play hard for him. Teams should never make a coaching change when the players are willing to run through walls for their coach. Trelving knows it, and sees it, and it is just a matter of time before he inks Hartley to a 3+ year deal I would think.

This team hasn't had a good coach since Darryl stepped down. They finally have one now.

Even with all the crap this franchise went through, I'm still glad we didn't hire Tippet over Brent. Just an awful, awful product.

Don't forget it took Burke a while to commit to Hartley as well. When Feasted was first fired, the word was the new GM would get to choose the coach. By the end of the season Burke was saying Hartley was staying no matter who the GM is. I suspect Treliving is going through the same process.

No, they have almost 100 years of NHL history to draw from....when can you think of a time where the team picked the coach and traded off/released most of the under performing players?
