Carolina is actually the kind of place that I think would benefit the NHL if they had a generational talent.

No one can tell me they pulled aside Matt Moulson and Brian Gionta and said "Okay guys, play like crap so we can get the first overall draft pick" and they agreed.
I don't really you think you need to tell Brian Gionta that.... He really hasn't been anything special the last few years and on a team without guys like Plekanec, Pacioretty and Galchenyuk - he really isn't going to to do much for you. Basically you could have told him "play like a 35 year old Brian Gionta" and it would have the same effect.

To be honest - aside from Moulson, the signings weren't anything special. Gorges on the first pairing? Gionta at 35? Mesjaros - who has been on the downside the last few years? I don't think the Sabres could legitimately have hoped for them to have much of an impact. It's hard to say whether the free agents just didn't want to come to Buffalo or if they didn't try hard enough but it sure looks like management just gave up on building a competitive team for this season. Lots of talent in the pipeline though so they'll have a solid team in 2-3 years.

Buffalo has scored 12 goals so far this season (the standings show 13 goals, but that's because of one SO win).

25 players currently have 12 or more points. Corey Perry has scored 10 goals, only 2 fewer than the entire Sabres team.

What might be even stranger is that Florida has only scored 14 goals, yet they have a 4-2-3 record and are only 2 points back of the last playoff spot in the East.

I was curious so I went and calculated the winning percentage of Buffalo, Caroline and Edmonton over the past 2 seasons and the games played this season.

Caroline has 56 wins in 139 games for a winning percentage of 40.29%
Edmonton has 52 wins in 141 games for a winning percentage of 36.88%
Buffalo has 44 wins in 142 games for a winning percentage of 30.99%

Calgary just for comparisons sake had 60 wins in 142 games for a winning percentage of 42.25%

The Edmonton Oilers are proud to present to the Buffalo Sabres their annual award:

They're just folks that see an oval shaped surface and naturally assume that something will be driving around it.
Imagine their surprise after a 20 minute warmup that it's only two Zambonis!
