The guys that have been talking about his pivot have gotten it right, IMO.

As a defenseman (that missed a lot of guys), I can say that when you miss with a check, the natural tendency is to throw your arms out to try and make some contact. The result is that your body is moving away from the hit but the arms move into the other player.

That is not what happened here. He planted his body and turned his whole upper body into the hit. And he led with his arm/elbow.
We're talking about a split second. He starts the hit with his left arm trailing behind him. As he makes the hit he's bringing his arm forward to fold both hands in front of his chest, and it's the glove/forearm that hits Ferland's head, not the elbow. Ya, there's still a bit of movement in the arms due to the timing, but I don't see anything other than a guy bracing for a hit and driving through, not up, with contact to the head because Ferland's in a crouched position.

Let's put this another way: say Volchenkov's hands/forearm/elbow remain perfectly stable. Do you think the hit looks any different? I don't. Contact was made as it was not because Volchenkov targeted the head, but because of their relative positions as he went through Ferlund. Careless, but not malicious, IMO.

What reason would he have had to target a 3rd line kid he has never even heard of before?[/QUOTE]

Because he doesn't care. Period. It was totally deliberate. Repeat offender and a dirty player

^ ^AV is elevating a smidge. Watch his left knee go from flexion to extention through the hit. You don't get lower by straightening your knee.

With regards to the timing, Ferland is approaching left shoulder first (as in head is farther away than the body for AV). The pivot begins a tad late to brace for the the Ferland shoulder to AV gut impact.

Yes I do. His forearm went into Ferland's face as the principal point of contact. If his forearm weren't moving forward, that wouldn't have happened. How on earth can you argue against that fact?

Those who think that the hit was not malicious and there was no intent are probably church going goody goodies... Thinking that no one could be that mean... Wake up! The guy is from Russia, a dog eat dog country where no one thinks twice about hits like this. They learned to do anything and feel nothing just to get out of that wretched place.

They also learned to protect their money if we're going to make strange extrapolations on someone's heritage. Why would he risk suspension there?

It's a careless and reckless play. Full stop. Suspension worthy

I don't think it was dirty or intentional but was the type of hit that the league wants/need to remove from the game.

A fine or 1 game suspension is probably enough.

It was dirty, but not intentional I don't think. Definitely dirty though.

How do you unintentionally swing your arm around your body, while leading with the forearm, to hit someone with it?

Look at it this way, at least you know who you don't want to play shinny with.

No, it was right at the end of the second. Flames decided to start the third by scoring 3 goals instead of punching a face to get back at him.

It was dirty. He drove his elbow through the contact, right at the head. It was hard, too, Ferland's a big boy and not easy to hurt.

I've watched it a few times now. I think the intent was to hit him, but not in the head. I've seen that hit (except the contact is made on the chest or shoulder of the hitee) many times. We all have. AV put his arm to his chest to brace for the contact. 99% of players will do the same thing given that he is leading with his chest and not his shoulder. There was no intent to make contact with his head but that doesn't excise the fact that is happened.
