I don't know, I was worried about exams too, most students are, I suppose, except for those that are geniuses or those that simply don't care much (a girl in my MBA class was all about "I am here to learn something good and not to get graded by someone"). But I was always conscious of the worst possible scenario: so, if I didn't get a good grade, then what? The nuisance of te-taking the course? Quitting the U? Taking a year off? All manageable outcomes.
There was probably more to this case than just midterm pressure. I mean, think of kid's parents receiving two kinds of news: a) "Mom/Dad, I cant' take this pressure anymore. I quit the University and I'm gonna work for McDonald's' vs. b) "We are sorry, your kid has committed suicide". Even the fact that some kids can actually doubt which one is the better option in making the above choice is incomprehensible in my mind...
