They could cause problems if they sign too many of these players to over-inflated contracts.

The best bet is to sign as many of these players to bargain contracts so that they keep their trade value if they become expendable down the line.

Say Reinhart or Agostino surpass Bouma as premiere bottom 6 forwards – a $2.25 million Bouma is going to be much harder to trade than a $1.25 million Bouma. My point is Treliving isn't going to fling an extra million at Bouma for sentimental reasons. He'll offer him fair market value.

I agree. I don't see any reason to worry, Treliving has proven to be a great contract negotiator so far, with the exception of Engelland, but he limited that contract to 3 years so even his contract can't be called a disaster.

Does Byron even make the team next year or the year after with Bennett and Ferland and Jooris and Poirier and Klimchuck and Rienhart and Arnold and Agostino and Granlund and Knight.
My god, do you even watch the games? Byron is the Anti-Seto/Jones/Stajan if there has ever been one.

Such a hard worker, huge puck possession, doesn't panic under pressure, high hockey IQ, soild two way game, always consistant in his effort, can play anywhere in the lineup and be effective.

Seriously how many times does Byron have to go out and be the best forward in the game for the Flames before he gets any love from some people?

He deserves more than another one year contract.

Hoping for a Backlund 5-6 year deal at 3.5-4.5 AAV.

Bouma has also been great so far, heart and soul player, hopefully a 2 to 3 year around 1.5 AAV.

Gio will command a hefty cap hit. He just turned 31 this month, so I'm pretty sure the Flames wont want it to be more than a 4 year deal.

Glencross can go somewhere else for his next contract. Hopefully the Flames can get some sort of return for him at or before the deadline.

Let me preface this by saying I love Bouma as a player.

But there is no way he's getting $2 million/year. If that is what he wants, you let him go.

Probably the most similar guy I can think of in the NHL to him is Craig Adams and he's never made more than $1 million a year. I could see $1.25 since if you feel he's big in the room. But he's a player you can replace with cheap rookies (i.e. Jooris) if he's going to need to be paid that much.

Bouma 2 years 1.3M per
Byron 1 year 800K (show-me or young guys take place)
Backlund 5 years 3.6M per (could end up being closer to low-mid 4M range with a good year again though)

Byron's been great so far and has had similar good stretched in the past. But he has also had some invisible times.

Can't wait to lose Glencross, though I recognize what he did in the past. Nowadays he's a Bourque with a bit more try in him.
