I don't think Wideman's salary has much to do with it as it's an outlier. The players do equate their salaries with a pecking order though, so to pay more for Brodie, may not set well with Giordano.

I would say pretty much 100% Brodie will make more than Gio next year.
If he isn't it will probably be a 1 or 2 year deal with some bad feelings left on the table.
The guys looking at 5 + years in the $5-6M range. he would be a top pairing dman on 15 -20 teams in the league and he isn't even 25.

And then next year, it will be time to extend Giordano. And then we'll be talking some real money!

You may be right and I might be wrong... but I just can't see them signing TJ to a long term contract that makes him the highest player on the team (excluding Wideman who I think will be gone sometime this year) effective next year.
I can certainly see them paying him 4 mil next year (the final year of Gio's $4.02 mil contract) and then bumping it up to 6 mil or so after that.. but maybe I'm wrong... its all speculative on our parts, unless some of you have insider information.

Excellent news!
I can see him getting something in line with Josi (7yrs/28mill) but maybe with a year less to bring the annual number up...6yrs/30mill sounds fair. Then Gio can sign a 5yrs/35mill to be our highest paid D.

Fairly certain Gio didn't make it this far being jealous and has a clue on the process.
He knows he'll get his huge payday if he continues his strong play.

Why wouldn't they make him the highest paid player for a season before extending Gio? What is the thinking there?
I hope we see a six or seven year deal and i would be fine with any cap hit at 7 or lower and if it's under 6 I'll be doing backflips.

At that age he is likely still a top 2 defenceman on the Flames. At 24-25 he is establishing himself as a legitimate top 2 defenceman. Guys that good usually stick around. It would be great to get two better guys, but highly unlikely.

8 years at 6.5 would be a great deal for the Flames, decent money now (likely low in the coming years) and locking him up long term. Yes please.

I could see something like $5m x 5 years or so.
I think Jay Bouwmeester is a good comparable for Brodie, and he just signed for $5.4m x 5 years, all of which are UFA years.
I don't think paying extra money for extra UFA years makes any sense. The player benefits from contract security if he gets a longer deal, and the team takes on additional risk if the player regresses or suffers a bad injury.
And how much better is Brodie going to get? I suspect a significant amount of his performance right now is directly attributable to Mark Giordano. My reasonable expectation of him is that Brodie's performance ceiling is him ACTUALLY playing as good on his own merits, as he LOOKS when he's with Giordano.
Maybe he'll be worth $8m in 5 years from now. And if he is, then give him $8m at that time. I have no problem paying players what they're worth. I do think its a poor idea to pay a player more than he is worth right now on the assumption that he'll get better, or that the cap will go up, or that the market price for that type of player will go up, etc.
Just give the guy what he's worth, when he is worth it, on a reasonable term.
And I think TJ Brodie is worth about $5m right now. And 5 years is a good term for a guy his age.

Frankly, I'd rather lock him up for the max term... he's really really good and still young so it's not like he'll even be old at the end of it. Sign him now, for as long as you can before the eastern media picks up on how good he is, he'll be a bargain.

8yrs @ 42 is what I think/hoping. That would equate to 5.25 per. (I think every day I have a new idea what Brodie's new contract will/should look like) I just love this player! Great building block!

To everyone talking about the Gio cap, and saying Brodie can't make more than Gio..
You do realize it's 2014, the cap is not 40 million, and Gio only makes FOUR million, right?
We will be considered a friggin joke if four mil is our internal limit for player salaries for the next two years. Cmon

It's not like that. The contract could start off at $4M for the first year and than rise over the time of the contract to whatever but in that first year he wouldn't make more than Gio. Gio will be up for a new contract after that first year, which would be higher than Brodie's.

Yeah for sure. I thought people were insinuating his AAV would have to be below or equal to 4m. If that happens, it would be to take him to UFA then bye bye :/

Its also fair to say that Gio has now reached his ceiling and Brodie has a long way to go before he's topped out.
For me he should be making more then Gio per year in 2 years tops.

Yup. Gio would gladly have Brodie make more than him for a year. Makes it easy on him and his agent to want an extra million a year over Brodie's contract for his next signing.

Pay the man. Lock him up long term, commit dammit.
It's the right thing to do. He's half of the best D pair Calgary has seen in a long, long time.
