While I agree with the sentiment that women do not like to be treated, or talked about as an object, the thread was devoted to what society saw as attractive.
No, it really wasn't. Society sees a lot as attractive. Cars, Men, Houses.... even some people like what are called 'big, beautiful women' but those pictures were ridiculed.
Quote:
The photos of the women posted were not some amateur voyeur posting up-skirts, or down shirt shots of strangers he/she took pictures of unknowingly.
The pictures were all of women, who consented to be photographed, and very likely for their own monetary gain, and reputation. They were models/athletes/actresses, or in some way a public figure. I am sure they were all aware, when being photographed in less than full attire, men (and very possibly women) were going to enjoy looking at them, and wasn't that the whole reason to begin with?
Not all of the pictures were professionally done. I didn't look at all of the pictures but perhaps there were some paparazzi photos in there too? Not all the pictures were of public figures.

If people were offended by the comments made in the forum, then isn't that the issue that should have been dealt with?
It was. No more pictures, no more comments. See? Easy.

Because the photos are photos that are seen everywhere, every day. Go to the mall, walk by a lingerie store, or womens clothing store, there are 12 foot posters of women in their underwear or half dressed. Walk by a travel agency, posters of women in bikinis, pick up a travel magazine while there, full of photos of women in bikinis, turn on the TV, half the ads are full of scantily clad women, and don't even get me started on "surfing the web"
Sex sells, and society knows it, and exposes it, I don't feel there was anything more offensive in the YLYL thread than anything advertisers shove in our faces on a daily basis.
So because advertisers shove this kind of stuff in our faces, it's okay? I don't recall any advertisers using a jiggly butt gif to sell me a thong actually. Which advertisers did that? And also, what company used the bouncing boobs gif again? I can't remember that commercial.

I understand the moderators made a decision, but I can also understand why some are upset by it, especially after the lengthy debate and poll, only to have what was the opposite of the poll results take place.
It's a shame that some posters don't want to grow and mature with the site but have to be dragged along instead.

So because society-at-large has sexist and objectifying attitudes towards women, CalgaryPuck should as well? I applaud the mods for taking the opposite approach; instead of contributing towards the problem, this site is now rising above it and taking an active approach to make improvements.

Improvements to what? Hockey talk? Video game talk? Movie talk? Cell phone talk? Makes no difference whatsoever. No more or less people will frequent the forums. The site made changes because they wanted to not because it matters or changes anything in society or matters to the masses that use the site.
How was it an unfair process? We had a lengthy discussion with the community on the subject and I know personally I read every post in the thread about it.This is actually an example of where we took steps to engage the community and gather input before making a decision.
And I think in your post you actually provide good insight into why the thread was offensive:
""girly pics" as it was our venue to share something we enjoyed with other fellow CPers just as though we were talking Flames, cars or food"
Women don't like to be talked about like they are cars or food.
First off I'd like to express that I am very grateful for the CalgaryPuck site and honored to be a member. I was a big fan of the BurgerQuest
As asked, in my opinion I felt the process was unfair because the debate first started out demonizing the creation of the YLYL thread but then quickly went of topic and started to look at sexism plaguing the entire forum which is unfortunately when i stopped reading. As I've mentioned before, I personally didn't see a direct correlation between the existence of the YLYL thread to certain individuals misogynistic behavior as a whole across the CP site. As well to my own fault, i viewed the threads poll as a measure to whatever potential outcome might happen, never did i believe the entire thread would be deleted and so quickly or without notice, it just never crossed my mind.
I feel as though you misquoted me by leaving the first part out of my sentence.

My intention wasn't to compare women to cars or food but instead only to describe the tonal nature of the thread. As others have pointed out and i too believe for either male or female models, their printed portfolio, which is accessible to anyone on the web, could be seen as a commodity and is admired by many and continually used within our society.

Okay, sorry not to specify, it was geared to what society considers attractive women. I agree, not everyone conforms to society, which is a good thing. The ridicule is what should have been dealt with.

Now you're just being nitpicky, like I said, they were not voyeur photos. If they were taken by Paparazzi, that is someone's profession, and although the target of their photo may not have wanted the photo to be taken, it is the lifestyle they lead that draws the paparazzi. And just because you don't know their name, doesn't mean they aren't public figures. I assume most were aspiring models, who want to be in the public eye.

That's not dealing with the comments, that's running from them. If the issue was offensive posters, hiding the evidence doesn't make them less offensive, nor does it deter them from being offensive else where. I suppose instead of mods handing out infractions from now on, they can just delete any thread somebody says something suspension or ban worthy in, rather than dealing with the poster.

Advertisers don't give a person the ability to choose what they see, people had the choice to enter the thread or not.
Jiggly Butt to sell a thong, Bouncing boobs, watch a victoria's secret fashion show, there's a company advertising to do just that, with both those methods. I could go on.

How does removing the YLYL thread help CP grow and mature while there are even more offensive threads open?

IIRC, Eastern Girl mentioned that she has previously taken extended posting breaks from the forum because she was sick of the pervasive sexism displayed by so many other members. And she's a woman who self-describes as having a "thick skin". How many other women (potential valuable members of the community) do you think were either driven away or never even bothered to register an account because they don't have the same level of "thick skin" as EG?
So yes, if the forums become less of a hostile place towards women, then more of them will be inclined to register/post and we will see improvements to hockey, video game, movie, and cell phone talk. Unless, that is, you believe women have nothing intelligent to contribute when discussing any of those topics.
I know right, and what about dem biches that wear short skirts, high heels and low cut tops.....
I dont get your point.
You dont have to howl and be an animal when seeing photos of attractive and scantily clad women or proclaim masturbation for the world to know, but at the same time those women arent 'victims.'
The victims are the women around here who havent had the same level of consideration and, quite honestly, the whole purpose of all of this is that they should feel welcome here.
And I'm using the term 'you' in a general sense, not 'you' personally.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
They should have thought about that before getting infront of the camera?

Deciding to be a model, or pose for photos (not porn) does not by default dehumanize an individual.

I'm most sad 'cause now I'll never understand what the rules of the OP's game were.

Um. Starting early today?
I think I get where you're coming from, and I believe we're in agreement for the most part.
The women in the photos and/or porn, are not the issue whatsoever. They arent victims, they entered into their situation well aware of the outcome and felt they were being appropriately compensated for whatever consequences they may suffer and as such gave their consent.
Thats not the issue. The issue is the comments made around here about those images. We've reached a disconnect. Attractive women are a great thing, but they arent what people, be they male or female, have come to CalgaryPuck for.

My day started early, my beer drinking will start tonight in the Beer garden watching the game in town.
Yeah we are in agreement. The don't step infront of the camera read as a "don't wear a short dress if you don't want to be raped" comment (whether intentionally or not).
Is it beer/game time yet?

I'm not going there in particular because I dont think thats right, but people who allow photos or videos of themselves to be taken professionally do so with informed consent and as such comply with the required regulations.
Its the fallout of that content and the fact that it's been deemed unwelcome here that we're dealing with now.
Which I dont have a problem with. Honestly, when I first came to this site that kind of content got your ass punted, I was surprised when all of a sudden it became acceptable.
Its definitely beer time though. I dont think many people can have a complaint with that? Beer O'Clock?

Getting home @ 3:30 and them heading down to the viewing sight to watch the game in the shadow of the old arena.

It feels odd asking this after so long, but can somebody explain the thread title to me? I never understood it.
It was a 4chan meme. I think - and I may not quite accurate - that it is a parody of "you laugh, you lose", the concept of which was to try not to break out laughing as people post funny images. In this case, YLYL means "you love, you lose" and I presume you failed if you 'fell' for the girls in question.
