This could be considered as a full-blown natural disaster (not sure if there is an official, federal government approved definition of the term). Mel Lastman would not have hesitated to call on armed forces for help. Is Nenshi considering anything like that? There is significant damage throughout the city.

I've only seen a few parts of the city but it doesn't look like anything that needs support from the troops.

This isn't really a snow storm, look at the branches, that stuff was frozen on and around the branches. This was IMO an ice storm.

My elm in front of the house split in three. It's done. I'm going to have to replace it somehow.

Not the Armed Forces, but Canada Task Force 2 has been activated for this.

If people burnt it after curing for year it would be great. Unfortunately there are guys like a neighbour go and take poplar another neighbours just cut tree spilt it and burn it right away. Whole neighbourhood full off smokey nasty smelling poplar the other neighbour just cut down and didn't want it.

The left wing and environmentalist nut-jobs are really enjoying this opportunity to slam Calgary and Alberta. I looked at the comments sections in some of the news publications and they are absolutely hilarious.

  • Tree branches are broken and hanging over sidewalks and roads, endangering pedestrians and cars.
  • Seniors, disabled and even normal working people cannot deal with this this by themselves efficiently.
  • The City is not going to be able to help efficiently for a while. 311 lines are overloaded, they don't take calls at this moment.
These are all good reasons to call on some extra help. Note my post though, I asked if Nenshi would be considering a move like that.

Agreed. I just spent the better part of 4hrs shaking/whacking trees around my neighbourhood, it's depressing to see how many are beyond saving. That said, it's a good feeling when you knock a bunch of snow off a branch dragging on the ground, and the second you do, it springs back to life a few feet above your head. Most didn't do that, but the few trees that did made me happy (and made me feel like I wasn't just wasting my time out there).

Was absolutely soaked when I came in, that 15min shower was fantastic.

Sounds like my day.
Those branches that jump up 3-4ft when you knock the snow off are what kept me going all day. As you know you're saving some pretty big branches. Seeing all the split branches was the worst though, as I know a lot of these trees are going to have to come down.

My whole street is city owned trees, and I know the city is going to come in and either
a) butcher them
b) cut them down completely.

Neither option is good and just further motivation to try and mitigate the damage now, rather than letting a bunch of non-arborists massacre my neighborhood.

I'd say it's near natural disaster levels. Up here in the northwest the snow was coming down for 2 extra days when there was nothing in the southeast. The roads are blocked by massive tree branches, most of the street lights are out and the traffic on Stony/Crowchild was insane this morning.

So I wonder what the chance of finding a tree removal person to take away the mature willow that broke in my back yard is? I'm guessing they're all going to be booked solid for a while.

Forgive my ignorance, but has this particularly devastating to the trees because they still have all their foliage on them so they can't take the extra weight?

lol, not really. It's been snowing in the SE since Monday, just like the NW. I'm pretty sure you had the same 27* Saturday and 24* Sunday we had.

I'm not a tree expert, but it appears as though the younger trees fared a bit better than the really large ones. Maybe they can bend a bit more because they aren't as thick?

In any event though, the devastation is massive and widespread. I haven't gone home yet, but the wife sent me a picture of our towering poplar and it's screwed.

Yip, exactly, each little leaf holds significantly more snow than a bare branch would.

for a solid day it was snowing up here while my girlfriend was working at a golf course in the southeast. I woke up to a snowstorm and she said there was nothing so atleast for a little while it was worse up here.
