We might have to do a CP road trip that somehow has a stop over in alabama so we can see how nice it is there first hand.

We could probably get a great deal on hotel rooms. Isn't there a guy on CP that runs a hotel...

You don't have to go far to get a great deal on houses in the US. Portland and Seattle will give you a much bigger bang for your buck than Calgary. Even outside of NY in Long Island you can get a very nice house for 400-500k.
The South is dirty cheap. It's always funny when you're watching House Hunters and some Florida/Georgia single mom is complaining that the massive 4-bedroom property selling for 200k that she is looking at is just not enough house her.
The one thing however you have to watch out for is property taxes. On that front we have it pretty great in Calgary...a lot of places in the US have crazy high taxes. Go to Long Island or Connecticut or something, and you'll probably be paying 15-20k property taxes a year.
That and you also have to account for things like health insurance (easily $500-600+/month per person) as well as education costs (ie, having to send your kid to a 15k/year private school right off the bat). Those things can really quickly make the price of living in Calgary feel (at least a little) less ridiculous.

Good news,
I plan on getting a job at the new embassy suites that opens in a few months. I spoke with the GM and just waiting for it to get closer to opening. Well That is a Hilton product, it just so happens that there is a Hilton Garden Inn right next door to the old hotel that needs an assistant manager. I have an interview today at 2pm with them. I'd love to go to the new hotel in a few months but it depends on how much they're going to pay me. If it's good enough I will just stay but I really want to be at the new property.
I should get a nice bump in pay, at least another 4k a year.

Down there you can't leave the house to get food and medicine for your family without one. You're risking your life whenever you foray out into the mobs of thugs and criminals.
Didn't you see the neighborhood they live in?

Beautiful country down there PIM, very jealous.
I've been down to Auburn quite a few times and spent many a night/morning/afternoon drinking moonshine on the Tallapoosa River and love it every time I can make it down.

I'm going to burn the old property to the ground and they're 50 yards away from my new property.

I'm going to listen to the embassy when they call me for an interview. If I really like my new job I'll probably stay unless they give me a boat load of money.
